Thanks Jordon,

I'll probably be giving them a call at some point.

Meanwhile, I have ordered the 3/16" fuel hose from a UK supplier.

Paul

Trying to not have to go to UK to source B1 fuel hose to replace those on my aging Farymann K34.   1/4" hose is commonly available (Trident, Sierra, etc), but not the smaller 3/16" size.

Any ideas?  I only need 3 feet or so, if anyone has some lying around!

Thanks,

Nice hole!

Cheap and cheerful!   Nice solution.

I replaced my tired leaking hatch a couple of years ago.   After removing the hatch (and copious amounts of old goop), it became evident that the job could have been a simple matter of re-bedding the existing cast frame, and having a new acrylic hatch made, and fitting proper gasket-replacements.  Instead, I opted for a new hatch, sourcing a Bomar with a bit larger/modern fit & function.   Interestingly, my old hatch will be eventually installed on Christopher Olsen's Contessa 26, and his hatch frame dimensions are different again.

There were no gaskets between the deck and the hatch.  It was all goop.

Hi Fessalo,

What was your Contessa powered with previously?  I'm wondering if some engines are better than others to replace, vis-a-vis motor mounts, dimensions, etc.   For example, will the Beta 10 fit a similar footprint to a Farymann K34, or Volvo Petter 5hp, or Yanmar, etc.  Or any of the many other engines factory-installed on these boats...

Thanks!

I'm curious!  Does this involve reworking the parts in place?  Or must they be removed and refurbished before reinstalling?

Yes, three seasons on the Harken, and could not be more pleased!

I did consider the Ultrafurl when I updated the furler on Lolly Jo.  I am looking forward to seeing your photos of the installation.  (I went Harken, btw).

Ditto.

I'd be curious to know how well this engine fits.

Is there going to be room to spare, or will serious modifications have to be made?

Ouch.

Great thread... thanks all!

4.5kts would be luxury!   Engine fires up fine... will be time to call a diesel mechanic in for a look-see next Spring.

I smell "expensive".

Phil -- What maximum knots do you get out of your Farymann?

Mine seems to run well, but can only manage 2.5 kts at best.   Desperate situation against 15kt headwinds with no sails up!!

Hi Picard,
I had the same issue with my Contessa -- boat and 30 year old Farymann 7.5 hp had been poorly stored, and left to stand in a farm field for 5 years.   I siphoned crankcase, gearbox, 1/4 tank of old diesel -- replaced lube and fuel... engine started up first time when I hooked up new battery and hit the switch!   Second season, I removed the fuel tank, cleaned with diesel (you can also have this professionally done), and changed the Rancor fuel filter (messy job).  Next season will be my 3rd with the boat -- will change all fuel lines, due to their age.  The mess on your lines is probably dirt/oil, and softened tubing material... mine are the same way.  If I were you, I would remove the tank and have it cleaned professionally.  Next season, I'll be replacing my big old steel tank with a Vetus 5 gallon tank.  As it is, I barely go through a 1/4 tank per season.  Frankly, I could use the stowage space...!

Hi Fessalo,

I did the zip-tie thing with Lolly Jo's mast last year (used 8" wraps in a "3-star pattern" every 16 inches or so), and it worked perfectly!   In my opinion, a better solution to the foam noodles used when "silencing" another Contessa's mast a few years back (foam breaking down).

I have talked with an Electrical Engineer friend of mine, who is going to help me figure out how to mount a pulley, and install a shaft alternator.  With luck, I may be able to generate 30 amps or better...  Will post my findings here.

This helps a great deal.  Thanks!  I"ll be looking into shaft alternators next...
