Re: How was your luanch, and source for a prop shaft? lessons learned. (13 replies, posted in Repairs/Modifications/Upgrades)
you might want to look at replacing the stufffing box with a volvo penta "packing box" i dont have the part number offhand, i posted it here some ways back. no flax, no drips. just pull the shaft every year (if youre particular like me) and grease the bearing surface and seal lips, then burp it once its in the water. then you can have a dry bilge....
the prop shaft shouldnt really be press fit in the flange, the hold down screws are what keep everything together. usually rust on the inside of the bore in the flange is what makes it so hard to separate flange from propshaft, i always install with some copper antiseize.
if the propshaft isnt scored, i would polish it up and reuse
im with ian on that one, work on it for a bit and not at a panic pace. be ready in a few weeks and wait it out till someone else is launching or being hauled partway thru the season. the best months in the 1000 islands are from aug till mid oct....

Topic: Ultrafurl (4 replies, posted in Sails & Rigging)
Well my Christmas present arrived early and can't wait to get it on the boat. An Ultrafurl 300. After helping install a used schaefer on another boat, and an alado as well - the Ultrafurl is hands down a superior product. It is almost twice the price of a Snapfurl 700, but there's no comparison between the two. I will definitely take a photo manual when I install this, in case anyone is interested in seeing a hands on installation. And if anyone is looking at adding this to their boat - give Heider a call. He knows his stuff. I'm not affiliated in any way with Ultramarine, this is just my own technical opinion based on experience with similar products, and a testament to their service and expertise
How many days still spring?

Re: KEEL DAMAGE (10 replies, posted in Repairs/Modifications/Upgrades)
Was the boat taking on water? Judging by the depth of the damage in the picture with the barnacle - I'd even be leery of any "professional" who would only complete that repair from the outside. There would be access (although it sucks working in there) from the V berth lockers.
Although not specifically Co26 related, I had a late start this year as I took on a contract installing a bow thruster tunnel in a Beneteau 473. First job ever that I didn't have anybody walk over and tell me what I was doing wrong... Those were two pretty big holes to cut in a very nice boat..... I'll someday get a website going with some pictures...

Time for a better surveyor.... I once watched an accredited surveyor try to measure the dia of standing rigging using a set of vernier calipers. Using the ID jaws.... Couldn't figure out why the numbers weren't making sense....

Topic: So has it happened to you? (3 replies, posted in Cruising)
That to matter where you tie up, with inevitability, someone will come and ask "is that a Contessa 26?"
How someone who walks up has either owned one, sailed on one, or knew someone who had one walks over and says "that's a pretty boat."
That a local fisherman/powerboater/person who had hardly seen a sailboat in their life... - ("ask the owner - he's walking up right behind you") would comment on how she doesn't look like today's boats. How she has nice lines. How she looks like she can handle herself when it gets rough.
Has it happened to you?

Re: Boarding ladder location (9 replies, posted in Repairs/Modifications/Upgrades)
Ive got a stainless outfitters ladder and the folding legs completely suck, depending on where you want to mount the ladder, adjust the legs accordingly and then have the legs welded in place.... pita to take the ladder off (something else to take off) before winter but at least the dinghy doesnt fold them inwards, again.....

Re: Handheld GPS (10 replies, posted in General Questions/Comments)
i have a 76csx (most modern piece of gear on the boat) with the blue chart for Canada. love it, works great. only thing is electronic compass is unreliable (duH) unless she's 100% horizontal.

Re: Possible Deck Stepped Mast Problems (2 replies, posted in General Questions/Comments)
the liner in my 74 has deformed, i did notice the first season that once sailed a bit hard i had to retune the rig. originally when i restored the boat i glassed in compression blocks where the bulkhead meets the floor, using the teak posts as compression posts - this wasn't enough so the next year i built "the beam", notched the posts and installed it. no issues now, i would say that it is a necessary fix on these boats

Re: New Engine NEED ADVICE please (11 replies, posted in Repairs/Modifications/Upgrades)
Aside from going with a bigger engine already quipped with a heat exhanger theres really not a whole lot of options. To fit a closed cooling system to a 1GM10 is not impossible but would require a fair amount of custom fabrication including the addition of an engine driven raw water pump, adaptation of a heat exchanger to the existing cooling water system, addition of a pressure tank as well as rerouting some exhaust water lines.
In short, I would not worry too much about using a raw water cooled engine in salt water The 1gm10 in my Contessa saw 2.5 years of salt water cruising. Exhaust elbow and head were fine, zinc was changed regularly. Minimal calcification in water passages in the head.
Just flush with fresh water for extended storage or sailing passage times, keep on top of the zinc and exhaust elbow! and she'll provide years of reliable service

Re: LF: Trailer (7 replies, posted in Wanted)
I would wager that one could build a trailer for 1500-2000. MCS is pricey. My brother got a quote for a simple 4 pad cradle for his CC24, delivered to iroquois would have been nearly 2200$!!!! I measured something similar, ordered the steel and we started on a Sunday afternoon. Worked 2 evenings together, 1 on my own, and Saturday till noon, by Sunday at 9am his boat was resting nicely on her new home (much better than stands). Used 2x4 rectang tube (not c channel). Total cost was ~680 incl all steel, hardware, plywood, threaded rod and big nutz for the pads, carpet, all welding consumables and a can of chromate primer for the welds. Not including beer.... Thats a far cry from 2200!

Re: Stuffing Box (and more?) (9 replies, posted in Technical)
if you search back though the forums theres some discussion on this
volvo penta shaft seal is a double lip seal / cutless bushing, that you pack with waterproof grease that clamps to the stern tube. works great, no drips, no graphite dust, no vent line. used on most beneteaus, jeanneaus, some hunters etc.
