While Dr. Bose didn't appear to be one of us in this forum, his CO25, Murphy's Boat is now under the ownership of ANÍBAL CARDAL (Ushuaia is the boat's name now)in the Azores and that link which you provided  chronicles Dr. Bose's delivery of Murphy's Boat from Seldom, Newfoundland to the Azores in Portugal.  Check out the pics that Anibal provided in our gallery section of Ushuaia (Murphy's Boat).  Exciting stuff indeed!  Thanks for the link.

Cheers,

Jose

No limits right?  Well then,  here's my wish list for Christmas 2006:

1) A Simrad TP-10 tiller pilot
2) An Icom  IC-M502B Fixed VHF Radio with a roving handset
3) A Furuno Radar Unit
4) A Force 10 barbecue (Medium should do it)
5) A teak cockpit grate
6) An 80 Gig iPod with a Bose SoundDock system
7) The wisdom and ability to wire the lot with the help of Nigel Calder's Mechanical and Electrical book
8) And finally to hit this Friday's Super 7 Lottery of CDN$ 25,000,000 so I can retire and sail as much as I can and
to buy each and everything on my list as well as to grant everybody in this forum their CO26 Christmas wish
particularly to those who are dreaming of owning a Contessa 26 and to one particular person out west (see
above) who deserves to call another Contessa her own once again.  So send me winning vibes and who knows,
maybe I'll announce it in January when we get together at the boat show.  Until then, Merry Christmas to all
and may all your craziest dreams come true.

Cheers all!

Have you tried getting parts for an old Farymann?  It's next to impossible so the answer is a definite yes so let the bidding begin! ;-)

J.

Andrew,

Loved them both and I gave you  full stars on both.  I suspect I'll be visiting youtube.com quite a bit to get my fix of sailing videos like yours until I get back on the water in April.  Sigh......winter just arrived in Ontario and it's bloody cold!!!

Cheers, mate!

José

Correct me if I'm wrong but couldn't you just balance the  7mm forestay with a 7mm backstay for both weight and rigidity?  I'm not sure about standing rigging nomenclature but this way  makes sense to me.

José

p.s. Hey Andrew, I saw your clip on youtube.com.  Great movie!

Hi Ivan,

Yeah, you probably need to run the engine a hell of a lot more (under load and not just idling.  You'll glaze the cylinder.) than the five minutes there and back.  Perhaps it was never really broken in when it was brand new and the problem just became worse over time.  Diesels love to work and the under use does it more damage than good.   If it is glazing that's causing the problem then you would have to get your cylinder honed to get that cross hatching which enables the rings to seat properly but I would get new rings just to get a brand new start.  Remember to break it in slowly and use more than the five minutes there and back and not at excessively high rpms.  Our hull speed may peak at 6 kts. so power above and beyond the required speed may just be foolish adverse conditions notwithstanding.

Here's the contact for your piston rings.  E-mail him and he'll tell you which distributor you'd be working with in your area.

I'll be cruising to the thousand islands area this summer so I may see you around.  I'll let you know when and maybe we could arrange something.

Hey Deb,

Hope you get access to another computer as I'd hate to see you go!  I love your insight into sailing and of course the fiery discussions every once in a while just like the last ones you posted.  It's like the UFC on CO26! In any case, have a great winter, a Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year if we don't hear from you until April or May.  Hey, there's always the boat show in TO in January for a possible get together!  Ciao for now.

José

Hi Ivan,

Blue smoke means that you're burning oil and not burning fuel too efficiently which means that your Farymann probably needs a new set of rings (around $ 200.00 from Germany).  While you're at it, have your valves serviced and just do a general tune-up/maintenance.  Check the cylinder also for pitting which may also account for the oil getting past the rings.  Just out of curiosity, when was the last time anybody took a peek inside?  Let me know if I can help you further.  Morava looks great in the gallery section.

Cheers,

José

p.s. I'm having the same trouble with my keel plug and I did what Bill suggested a few weeks ago.  Now, if I could just free up enough time to complete my winterizing......

Just happy to help out a fellow Contessa owner.  Hey, maybe we could persuade Anibal for a chance to sail in the Azores?   Perhaps initiate some kind of exchange program?   What do you think? ;-)

José

p.s. Your galley looks great!  How's that hybrid stove working out.  Quite strange, but I'm sure you'll enlighten the rest of us of its attributes.

...Thanks for the assist, Jose!  Didn't know anything about Ushaia's history so it was pretty much a stab in the dark.

Also, don't forget to install jack lines as you will need to go to the bow or somewhere on deck to untangle something on particularly windy situations.  Trust me, it will happen!  More importantly, don't go singlehanding without a harness on.  Safety first!  Congratulations on your launch!  As we're all pretty much out of commission for the next 5  months or so, do post a hell of a lot of pics just to keep our collective spirits up.

Cheers,

José

The quality better be there and then some with a bare bones price tag of US$ 118,000.00 for a brand new Dana 24.

Hi Marc,

Thanks so much for pointing that out.  I did check the other sections of our forum but it didn't occur to me to check the "Tech Notes".  This helps quite a bit for everyone I'm sure.

Hi John,

I would also spray potential mold areas in the boat with a product called, "mold control" by concrobium which you can easily buy at the Home Depot.  I suspect that the Contessa you saw in Vermont spent some wet and warm periods under the tarp for mold to form but I doubt that it formed during the winter months.  I too have some work to do on the mast with a new anchor light at the top of the mast as well as replacing an antiquated antenna and cable and just updating the wiring that's probably as old as the boat which is 30 years old.  I was also thinking of wiring for a radar unit but I'm still not sure just yet.

Thanks for the feedback!

Hi Steve,

It's interesting what you said regarding plugging the air intake with a rag to prevent moisture from coming in.  I've also heard of something called "fogging oil" which is sprayed right into the cylinder via the injector port(s).  What about just positioning the piston at top dead centre which is the compression stroke which pretty much eliminates anything coming into the cylinder?  I also agree with the notion that the mast should be taken down during the winter months as it's very stressful for the hull, rigging, etc. when the mast is subjected to very high winds not to mention heavy, frozen precipitation along with it.  At least on the water, the motion of the boat alleviates a lot of the stress mentioned above but I'm sure there's more than one school of thought regarding the subject.  Good luck on your haul out next week.  Today's haul out for me was bitter sweet at best as the weather was superb for a sail but she only had time for a twenty minute ride enough to heat up the oil before I had to change it.

Thanks for the response, John.  I took the keel plug out for the winter lay-up so do I still need to put anti freeze in the bilge?

Hi Group,

Tessa comes out of the water tomorrow and I was just wondering about everyone's winter lay up routine regarding the engine, head, etc.  Any and all advice will be most welcome.

José

p.s. I'm so depressed that the season's over but being last out, I'll be first in in April.  5-1/2 months and counting.

Yeah! Isn't that for antennas?  Please elaborate for us if you would.  Thanks.

Hi Roland,

Don't make any rash decisions until you take out the head, sleeve, piston, etc. and see how bad things really are.  I too had a similar experience when I bought Tessa in February.  While she turned when started, she couldn't really build up enough compression to ignite the diesel in her cylinder.  I thought that the piston rings were stuck in their grooves until the mechanic I hired pulled the sleeve, head, piston and we then discovered that rust build-up on the cylinder head, valves, spring had affected the seating of the valves to decrease compression.  As well, rust had formed on the walls of the cylinder wall itself causing pitting which also affects compression.  To make a long and sordid story short, the mechanic(s) pretty much told me to re-engine to the tune of CDN$ 10,000 or do a partial re-build at CDN$3,500.00 as Farymann parts can be very expensive.  Dejected, I asked my brother in law who's a millwright and he just chuckled (the nerve!) and made a couple of phone calls before he had to fly to Texas for a job for two weeks.  He had one of his suppliers in Hamilton, ON lightly hone the cylinder and clean up the cylinder head and valves of the rust and re-seat the valves and he told me to get new piston rings as they were probably 30 years old and they had to come from Germany.  Are you ready for this?  The honing and reconditioning of the cylinder head and valves as well as re-seating them came to a whopping CDN$ 40.00 (forty) and the piston ring from Germany came in at CDN $ 190.00 (that's one hundred and ninety) which at CDN$ 230.00 pales to whatever the experts wanted to take from me.  On July 1 my brother in law took all the elements and put it all back together himself and with a cheshire cat grin, he turned the key.  She fired on the first try and she's been rockin' and rollin' ever since without fail.  If you can find a reliable supplier to first of all clean off the rust and do what I just  chronicled here and have them do precise measurements of the cylinder wall just to see if you're well within tolerances which I'm gonna bet that you are then go the same route before doing anything else.  Talk to Dave at EntecWest who mirrored what my brother in law said and did which save me the cost of re-powering which shouldn't really happen very often especially on fresh water boats.  Once you get her going, make sure you put a diesel fuel additive every time you fill the tank which replaces the sulfur that they take out on today's diesel.  We need that sulfur for lubrication in our older engines.  These engines should outlast our boats.

Good luck and let me know how you fare.

Hi Roland,

I had my K30 which is from 1976 partially re-built in June and is working flawlessly since then.  What exactly is wrong with yours?  Give me all the details.  Perhaps I can help.  Shannon (ex-Rhiannon) is also a great source of info as she had the same model Farymann as yours.

Hey Pogo!

I'm about 45 minutes west of Toronto in Hamilton.  You have exactly a month before I haul Tessa out of the water and I have a fairly flexible schedule so tell me if you're interested and which dates are good for you and we'll go out for the day.  Cheers!

Hi Bilgeret,

Could you possibly post some pics in the gallery section  of the wood stove aboard your Contessa?

Thanks.

If you're looking directly at your stern, it's usually at the upper right hand in a little rectangle.  Now, in some cases where the boat's been awlgripped, it may be a little difficult to make out the serial or it may not be there at all if it's pre 1974 or 73, I believe.
