Topic: Value of a contessa

Re: Value of a contessa

Before you do anything, get it Marine Surveyed by someone that knows what they are doing and not a check off list type person.  They can tell you alot about the boat and save you money if the boat is not what they say it is.  Also, look at the basic parts for structure soundness, ie chain plates, standing rigging, sails conditions (look at them fully) sheets/ropes for aging or conditions, etc.  The AM-FM radio is just extra.  Make sure the desking is sound, you can read alot about that on this forum.  Just make sure you have great structural/sound boat then offer $20,000 CND as you are look for a boat first, not the extras.  They just help the selling if need be.  Good Luck and you will have to tell us the Boat's # for our Contessa 26 List. jklee

Re: Value of a contessa

Hello again

The seller was pretty much set on getting 24,000 for the boat.  The survey was great, a few small cracks in the deck gel coat, interior excellent, only down was the main sail which will need to be replaiced in the next 1-2 years.

It appears that taxes are mandatory here in Newfoundland for used sailboats, and the retail sales tax is 15%.  A final cost of 27,600.....  unfortunatly that seems a little high.

Any of you have experience with taxes on used sailboats?  Any way around it?  Seems crazy for a boat to change hands 4 times and each time 15% sales tax applied.

thanks again

Re: Value of a contessa

you should look into "registering" or more commonly known as documenting the vessel.

Re: Value of a contessa

Looks nice.Is it anchored in Quidi Vidi. The best deals on these boats seem to bein central  Canada. If you are out on the margins as you and I are ,I think you pay a small premium for a desirable and reputable vessel as you never know when one will come on the market.Traveling to buy or look at another boat must be factored into the cost.As it turned out Three others came on the market here soon after I bought mine and the two nicest sold fairly quickly.,as did mine.My attitude is that when the right thing comes along, act, cause a couple of thousand this way or that is peanuts in the big scheme of things, when you have added annual moorage, hauling, maintaince and insurance. This comes to over a third of the purchase price of my boat every year.Mine was 18,ooo but came with less gear.Completing the basic outfitting was surprisingly expensive when things like charts are over 20 bucks each and you must, absolutely still have them .Still, looks like a nice boat for the 2o,ooo range, but what do I know.I hope to get back to your neck of the woods eventually to do some crusing.Cheers Bilge

Re: Value of a contessa

Wow,nice wiring.Looks like someone put some serious time into that.

Re: Value of a contessa

Stefan
you mentioned registering the vessel?  is this a way to escape taxes of 15%? Is there any way?  Not sure it matters now as an individual overseas has made an offer on the boat and it is likely sold.  Buying our first sailboat is exciting but a little nerve wrecking as well.
thanks for the posts everyone.
If you know of any other contessa's for sale drop an e-mail scombden@hotmail.com
thanks

Re: Value of a contessa

by registering the vessel you don't pay sales taxes.  not sure what happens if you're bringing a boat built out of canada into canada, but this wouldn't really apply here.  only thing about 'registering' a vessel is 'put every ship a-sail' as told by Johnny Horton.....

Re: Value of a contessa

My understanding is that if the country of origion is not part of ,I believe N.A.F.T.A.,then you pay duty, and not sure about taxes or if the common wealth is included in that umbrella.I was going to have to pay duty  on a swedish folkboat out of the U.S. if I had completed that deal.Interestingly I paid sales tax but not G.S.T. on two registered vessels I bought in B.C.,and on the contessa I think it was sales tax and G.s,T. on the brokers commision.Maybe every province is different.
