Topic: Ferryman 8 HP transmission fluid

I can't find any information in the manuals I got from the previous owner on the proper transmission fluid to use with my Ferryman 8hp on my Contessa 26?

Re: Ferryman 8 HP transmission fluid

Hi Phil,
I am travelling and don't have the manual with me.  However, the best place to ask about anything Farryman is Entec West ( http://entecwest.com/ )  The mechanic there has been extremely helpful and knows more about Farryman engines than anyone else I've ever met.  It's a good contact number to know for parts and advice.

edit:  oops, you were asking about transmission fluid.  I'm guessing you have the Hurth transmission, as I do, and you may wish to look up info on the model of transmission you have rather than the Farryman engine.

Cheers,
Jordan.

I posted about this a few years ago.  20 weight oil is fine (no detergents!)

Re: Ferryman 8 HP transmission fluid

20 weight oil...?  Ok...  The transmission has a threaded bolt on top with a cylinder attached (with no apparent markings)...how much oil do I put it.  I guess this is some sort of dipstick?

There is another similar bolt head just above the linkage axis...is this another area where oil is needed...and would that be a different type?

Re: Ferryman 8 HP transmission fluid

Apologies .. I used 30 weight for the gear oil.  On my engine there is a threaded filler cap with a cylindrical tube attached for level.  This is right on top of the transmission.

HD SAE 20 for the crankcase
HD SAE 30 for the gearbox

Re: Ferryman 8 HP transmission fluid

Hello/Bonjour

I concur with your description of the cylinder over the top of the transmission box...however, I couldn't find any markings on the cylinder as to the level required...

Should I just fill to the top or halfway?  Thanks for your earlier reply.

Re: Ferryman 8 HP transmission fluid

Bonjour Philippe,

There should be a notch approx 1" above the end of the "tube" below the filler.  I'd be surprised if it is not there!
