I have a prop question. I will be updating my current motor to a Beta 13.5 and I am trying to figure out what prop I should get. The dealer recommended the following: 12" diameter x 8 pitch, 3 blade.

I'm wondering it I would benefit from a 2 blade prop as far as less drag? What are the advantages or disadvantages of 3 blade vs 2 blade?

As always any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I got a Contessa 26 last summer and live in the NYC area. I like that idea, though a bit far away from the lakes...

I've been sailing most of life but only on small boats and on local waters. Last summer I bought my first sailboat a Contessa 26. While I know how to sail and managed to sail/motor my Contessa from Toronto to Orient Point, Long Island, there are many things I don't know.

I would like to learn about coastal navigation, proper use of the radio, radar, sail trim, and safety procedures, anchoring, etc.

I'm planning on taking my boat up to Maine next summer but at this point I don't feel comfortable enough with my skill set to do so.

I'd like to find a sailing school in NYC that offers a series of classes and/or certifications.

I've looked into Power Squadron classes which seem affordable compared to the local sailing schools. However I've read a lot about ASA courses as well.
I plan on taking a hands on cruising course in the spring but would like to take advantage of the winter months as well.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Thanks for your work keeping this site up. It's been invaluable to me.

I'm planning to document the installation with photos which I'll post in the galleries....

Thank you very much for your reply on both issues. I gave my local boatyard my official go ahead to install the Beta. Good to know there is a reliable Beta resource.

Now all I have to do is make it through this winter!

It's a 72 JJT. Don't have any tanks installed...now I'm starting to get worried. Will have a look from the inside for sure!!

The boat did not take on water thankfully, the damage does not seem to be deep enough that it would need work from the inside..hopefully...

I planning to repower my boat with a Beta Marine 13.5. I use to have a Kubota 0C60-E and while the motor got me from Toronto to NY,  6.5 HP is just not powerful enough. Had a few scary experiences trying to tie up to my mooring in high winds and against large waves this summer. I'm also planning to sail up to Maine next summer and would like the security of a stronger motor.

The 13.5 seems to be a popular choice for the Contessa. I would love to hear from anyone who has this motor. Any tips, prop size recommendations, etc would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Everyday I'm happier and happier with my Co26. She is the perfect size and her systems are just complicated enough to allow me to figure out how to fix them while learning about them.

Today I went to pick up my boat which I had put away in a protected inlet in which she could ride out Irene. There was no wind so I had to motor. When I checked the water exhaust in the back of the boat to make sure that the water pump was working I noticed that the water was blackish in color and seemed to have a bit of smoke mixed into it. The more gas I gave the motor the darker the water.

Two weeks ago some jelly fish clogged the fresh water intake for the motors cooling system. As a result my motor quickly overheated, the cabin filled with blue smoke. I checked the motor after this happened and found that my Vetus water lock exhaust had started to melt so that all the wet exhaust was gushing into my bilge.

I bought a new water lock exhaust, installed it. Today was the 4th time I used the motor since the installing the exhaust.

I've know very little about diesel motors but I'm thinking I might need a oil filter. I did change my oil a month ago but did not change the filter.

Has this happened to anybody, any input would be greatly appreciated.

The motor is a 6hp Kubota.

Had my boat hauled out today. Turns out there were no anodes of any kind, not even magnesium from brackish water. The boat has been in fresh water its entire life except for the few weeks at it's new home.

The folks at the boat yard recommended a hanging anode as I'm on a mooring and away from other boats. They suggested that this would be the economical way as opposed to having an anode mounted on the keel that would be bonded to the necessary metals.

I'm going to go with hanging anode for now until haul out in Sept and see how everything.

Thanks again!

Thanks for the info about the zincs. I realized I had to do this but did not know how soon I should.  I will be getting the boat hauled out to replace anodes on monday. Unfortunately I could not do it sooner. It's been on a mooring for 12 days in salt water so far, hopefully everything will be ok.

Hello,

I just want to introduce myself again. I just made to Orient Point, Long Island in New York after a 3 week journey bringing my new Contessa 26 back from Brighton, Ontario.

Spending three weeks on the boat proved to me that my decision to buy a co26 was the right decision. She is a wonderful boat that handled beautifully throughout my trip, especially the last 8 hours when i encountered a 25knot day with stronger gusts. I felt secure in my boat and she handled the weather perfectly. I finally understand what a balanced boat she is.

I hope to be an active member of this forum as this is my first big boat and I will undoubtedly encounter a steep learning curve when it comes to upkeep.

I will be posting some photos of my trip soon.
