Hi There,

I own 1984 CO 26 hull# 316 "Dharma Rose" (Varuna was hull #324 from I have read).  Mine is one of the few CO26s with the Contessa logo that was after the transition to lead ballast and improved cockpit, anchor locker, etc.

From what I can tell, 1984 and after... (lead ballast) boats are selling for about $15K to $25K depending on condition and if they come with trailer.  A newer Yanmar or better yet, Beta 14, gets you to the top of the sale list along with asking price. Trailers are amazing tools for these boats too.  My trailer has saved me tons of money by avoiding winter yard storage and labor rates.

I am currently restoring Dharma, and subsequently taking a year off to do it as I have a young 7 month old son at home.  I have already purchased the Beta engine, and Monitor wind vane system (target to re-splash is spring 2019 to get the boat ready to sail to Bermuda in the Fall of 2019).

If you are looking to sell, let me know.  I may be interested depending on the condition of the boat.

Hope that info helps...

Did this association ever happen?

I am the proud owner of 'Dharma Rose' 1984 JJ Taylor 26 hull #316.  Photo attached.  I need some help... or maybe I can help you.

I have a 1984 Bukh DV8 ME diesel engine that is original to my 1984 Contessa 26 (JJ Taylor).  I have just about given up looking for a sister engine.  I would be willing to sell it now that I am looking down the barrel of a repower. I have been looking for a backup DV8 engine so that I have available parts if I end up needing them (these engines are very hard to find and if you are interested in this your have been searching for a while like me).  I am sailing the boat offshore, and need to know I have a reliable source of parts before I fully rely on this as the auxiliary engine.  Hate to sell her and have to refit to a newer engine.

Sale would include, entire working engine, transmission, shaft, and prop if you are interested.   I would be willing to trade for a 1GM10 or Beta 14 that have been remanufactured (with documents from sale or from licensed diesel shop).  Glad to create video of it running.  Used it all last summer sailing on the Chesapeake Bay.  Photos show all new banjo fitting that I installed on the engine (2) years ago when I boat her. Would be willing to ship at buyer's cost once I have it on a pallet for shipping.  Intend to pull engine next 30 days at marina on Chesapeake Bay or in my shop (depending on when it sells).  If you have a DV8 or engine to swap... let's talk. ok to email or call me too:

engine is located in my boat near Charlottesville, Virginia, U.S.A.

I have recently discovered (upon my purchase of a 1984 CO26) how the boat has a fiberglass encased internal waste tank.  Not happy with that scenario, with moisture leaching into the hull being only the first of many concerns with that situation.  I need info and feedback from others that have this (not sure that all CO26 years have this type).  Also, I would love to hear from others that have abandoned this tank and installed a separate removable tank.  I guess I will need to do that nasty job of pumping it out and cutting the lid off of it below the salon sole.  Then I would inset a new tank or just leave it bottom of the old 'tank' exposed below the boat sole once I clean the %#@% out if it.

Anyone?

I am in the market for a Contessa 26 with lead ballast, anchor locker, Diesel engine (Beta Marine ideal), haul trailer, and in well kept condition by a caring owner who actually sailed her.  We are entering a poor part of the year to find such a boat, but I am patient. If you have one or may know of one coming on the market in the coming months, I would be interested in speaking with you. I just recently sold my Ericson 27 that I restored over 3 years... After deciding I needed a Contessa to fulfill my plans.  I am located in Charlottesville, Va.  Ph: 434-531-2572. Direct email is scott@abbottandco.com.  Thanks a bunch!
