The refit for Lolly Jo continues as schedules.  So far, no plan to change out the Farymann K30M, which seems to run quite well.  However, I have hit a snag in my rewiring, as I am not sure how this engine delivers power to the batteries, as it appears to have no alternator.  There is a existing positive lead from the starter which I suspect acts as a generator of some sort of voltage to top up batteries when running.

Can anyone explain how this works?  What kind of amps are generated, and how does this compare to the output of an alternator?

I'll take a look at mine and advise.

Welcome Saltycruiser!

Thanks John! I appreciate your comment.  One of the main things (no pun intended) I am looking for is better down wind performance of my mainsail in light air.

Ian, I like the simplicity of your system.

I believe that the aft mounted traveller support I have specified for the builder will be more than strong enough for the job intended, and the sheeting system that I have chosen can only improve upon some of the more annoying shortcomings of the A-Frame setup.

However, as Stefan said (and others have noted elsewhere), a cabin top traveller (or something arranged in the forward cockpit -- oww!!  My knees!!!!) might be ideal.  I'm not looking to race (never say never, I suppose), but I do believe the traveller will make our sailing experience more pleasurable.

I'll post photos once it's installed.

Thanks all!

Thanks to the generosity of a friend's time, and access to his boat, I now have rough dimensions for a traveller mount.  Still looking for plans, or a template, if anyone has these available.  I'd like to check against my measurements, before I send these off to be built.

Cheers!

Thanks Mark!
I have already been in touch, and they do not have the plans.
I'll have to wait until Spring, so that I can get underneath the tarps and measure for myself.

Cheers,

Christopher,

While I was researching JJ Taylors last year, found that there was a variance in boom length -- depending on the supplier (as Adrian has suggested). For example, and eyeballing these, yours and mine seem to be different in length, and how they attach to the boom, yet our boats are only 3 years apart.  It might be an idea to post a pic of your boom so others can recognize it as similar to their own... if measurements are handy.  I have a seen a few Contessa pics where the spars looked similar to yours.

Thanks Jose!

Shannon was quick to reply, and is looking for the traveller dimensions.  She said to say "hi" to everyone, and that she would be checking in on the forum soon.

Update on stainless traveller support:  Stainless Steel Outfitters can build me one for Lolly Jo -- however, they do not have the pattern or measurements of one previously made by them.   Does anyone have, by chance, this pattern?

Much obliged!

I had a similar thought to Christopher's: Suspect that the keel struck bottom beam-to, just as a wave hit the opposite side.  Thankfully, these boats were built tough.  I wonder if other 25-27 footers would have fared so well as this Contessa (de-masting notwithstanding).  I'd be interested in seeing the keel afterwords.

Thanks John.

I found your traveler thread from 2006 (Stainless steel work), and have contacted Stainless Steel Outfitters.  They recently built a new pulpit for Christopher Olsen's Contessa 26, and did a fabulous job!

Hey Bill,

I think  the board is active -- in the sense that plenty of us are checking in.

Good news is, that depending where you are, there are several Contessa 26s for sail.

Hope you find "yours"!

Jose/John,

I have been keeping up a list also.  Includes registration numbers for many.

And the answer is...

HD SAE 20 for the crankcase
HD SAE 30 for the gearbox

Now, have to find this oil and gear oil!

Hi everyone,

Getting ready to try starting up a Farymann in our Contessa, which has been out of the water for 5 years.

Engine is in surprisingly great shape.  Cranks fine by hand with decent compression. I have a replacement impeller in hand. We have drained the old diesel and engine oil.  Also, we removed the transmission fluid for good measure.  Now looking to replace the tranny fluid, and cannot find any information about what to use.  My research (and a hand written note in a shop manual kindly sent by Ian) suggests ATF, while my engineer friend insists that this must be gear oil of some sort.

I purchased a quart of Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF, rationalizing that it probably would work fine.  Any wisdom out there?

Thanks!

I'd be interested in learning more about your sails.  Contact me at "cpaulcarter AT gmail DOT com"

Hi,

Does anyone have a spare copy of a manual for the Farymann K34, and perhaps a parts list?

I'm looking forward to trying to start the engine on our "new to us" '79 Contessa in a few weeks time!   I understand that it probably has not been fired up in 5 years.

As typified by newbies everywhere, I have probably duplicated efforts already made.  I was curious to see how much of the Contessa fleet I could compile from the Internet.  As such, I have a new list to share which appears to be more complete than others I have seen posted here and elsewhere.  Simply email me, and I will be happy to forward it.

Any corrections/additions would be most welcome!

Does anyone have the dimensions of the Contessa's set of gudgeons and pintles?  I would like to add a 3rd set to my '79 Contessa 26.  Source?

Thanks!
