So Morava is going to receive a new Engine during the winter of 2010 - the Faryman K34M has done a great job for the last 30 years but I think it is time to replace it.

So question to the group:  Kubota or Yanmar?

Hey Bob:

Just from the pictures on Tim's site Equinox looks really great.

I did email Tim extensivley, great guy, always got back to me and was very reasonably priced but once I worked out my budget, travle and even the exchange rate, which is looking better, I just could not swing it.  But he sure would be my first choice.

Hello again:

Well, It looks like I am committed to getting Morava refurbished by Boat Services Kingtston for the coming winter.  This means a new paint job for both the Hull and Deck, all leaks fixed, new wiring and a new hatch and finally a new engine - either a Yanmar or a Kubota.

After following the restoration of Equinox at Nothern Yacht Restoration I was very tempted to get Morava shipped to Maine - but of course that proved too expensive.

rbporter it looks like you have a fantastic new boat and I hope you are enjoying it this spring.

As I start the overhaul I will post pictures and comments.  But the restoration of Equinox has really set the bar.

Cheers,

I was just thinking about wanting to visit Main Duck, I have no VHF as the wiring is all screwed up in my mast so that was my only worry.

But Main Duck would be a great place to meet up.  Where abouts in Gan are you (Gordon Marine?), I spent a lot of time in and around Macdonald, Mermaid and Aubry etc... last summer.

Good luck outting her into the water for June - there is nothing better in my book when there is that moment when she hits the water after a long winter lay up.

I couldn't agree more.  They reparied my Storm Jib that Andy made for my Dad 25 years ago and also fixed a rip in the Genoa for fifty bucks without trying to talk me into buying new sails.

Hey everyone - as you know I keep trying ever year and am happy to do -  so is there any interest in a Lake Ontario Rendezvous for 2009?

It is getting lonley at Collins Bay in Kingston as I am the only Contessa 26 that I know of.

Anyway just an idea and open to suggestions of place and date.

Cheers

Hello everyone:

Just purchased a new main sail for Morava.  I had been using the orginial, which was 29 years old.  I had the sail made by Kingston Sail Loft, right in Kingston, Ontario.  I cannot complement these two sail makers enough.  The sail looks fantastic and is well made.  Everything is hand made and she fits Morava like a glove.  I had two reefing points installed, with a loose fit and full battens.

The final price with taxes was $1,800 CAD and while there are cheaper sails out there many of my quotes from other companies such as UK Halsey and North Sales where in the approximate price range of $1,300 to $1,500.  So I paid more but I do not think you could get a better sail.  So apologies if I sound like a commercial for these guys but it is really nice to see the workmanship on the sail.  By far this is the most expensive item I have pruchased for Morava but since that sail is the "main" sail I figured it was worth it.

Once I get a picture of it up I will post it on the web site.

Cheers

I am most certainly going to be there this year.

Hi Jim:

What I have noticed is that they take a boat hook and drop the one end of the strap down while a third person watches from the stern in order to position the strap past the rudder so it sits under that section behin the prop.

It is a three man job because you have a guy looking at the stern to make sure the strap is positioned just right - the boat is backed into the dock - and you have a guy on the port and one on the starboard side and then they thread it very carefully from the side - not from the rudder going backwards or under the keel - they thread it through the opening between the prop and the rudder  - hence the use of the boat hook or line attached to the strap to bring it across with out hitting the prop..

And if she is positioned right, she sits perfectly in the straps and then she drops right into the cradle.

I know - with the full keel most marinas have a hard time lifting her out of the water - but so far - knock on wood - Collins Bay has it down to a science.

Hope this helps - I will post another picture that might help a bit.

Cheers

Well - I have posted the pictures of Morava's stern ladder - not so great - I took them with my BB but hopefully they are helpful.  I posted them in the technical and maintenance section.  Also I added a couple of other pictures of her being hauled out just this weekend in the Boats section.

Genco in Toronto is the place to look - they have down lots of Dodgers for Contessa 26s - but they do not install also, this is further afield but Top Shop in Belleville does a good job - and they quoted me approximately $1,200.

Hi rbporter:

Primary reason for the Monitor is that it has a very good reputation, tried and true.

Also many Conetssa 26s that have done some serious long distance cruising have used the Monitor and swear by it - so perhaps I am being naive but compared to other wind vanes, it has a simple set up and it is realitively easy to fix and get spare parts.

It is really the only vane I have looked at seriously - cost is a bit daunting but if it supports manufacturing in North America - well I can support it.

Hi Peter:

I have mine mounted on the stern close- off centre and on the port side of the transom - I think it is out of the way - I plan on mounting a self sterring vane from Monitor and everything should still fit - your right length is key - I have a standar steps that fold up and I just tie it off the pushpit- but had to add an extra step (a round bar tied to the last step) in order to properly get out of the water.  It is awkard climbing over the pushpit - but it is out ofthe way.  I will take a picture this weekend and post.

I am looking forward to it - I had some insane notion that I needed to stay old school, but given the flukey winds in Lake Ontario, a furler is just the answer.

Hey a mini rendevous - I am up for that - I have a couple of sailing weekends left until she is hauled out during the week of October 15.  Place and a time anyone?

I am going to cave and get a furling system - what would you recommend - the goal will be to have a system that will support cruising.

I guess so - TO boat show is always good, and of course there is always next year;-)

Hi Jose - yep I am up for it, I hope to take three weeks off in and around that time.

Hopefully there will be others interested.

Cheers

Well - thought I would try again - anyone interested in one - how about the August Long weekend 1st until the 4th for dates.

Location could be Toronto Area as most of you are there - I will always suggest Kingston given I am there but more than happy to head to Toronto with Morava.

Thought I would try again - so any interest, let me know.
