The diesel on my boat has died. I need to repower. I don't think that I can afford a new inboard diesel, so, any opinions or options would be appreciated. Electric (inboard or out) or put an outboard on the back?

This certainly is a fun topic, and all too common with this boat. My tank had developed a leak which was allowing waste water to drain to the bilge. Joy!  The leak was very difficult to find and repair, so I cleaned the tank as best I could, sealed it up, and installed a new, smaller, removeable tank under the vberth. This meant installing all new hoses from the head. Everything works well now. Since I am a day sailer, my use of the head is minimal but a nice convenience.

I have used Triton Sails for repairs for the past 5 years and have been very happy. Their service is excellent and the work is good.
A friend of mine had them make a new set of sails for his C&C 30 and he was very happy.
cheers,  Kevin

Hello Jordan, and all,
I am here. I just have not been checking into the forum on a regular basis.  Actually, I have been a member and visitor to co26.com since I bought Northern Spy II in 2008.
Also, I am at the Port Credit Harbour Marina, not PCYC.

I remember seeing 'Free n Easy' just offshore of Port Credit earlier this month. That was exciting since I used to sail on her with the previous owner out of Port Credit.

I am interested in getting together with other Contessa owners so please count me in to any future activies.
cheers, Kevin Little

I have an 8 horse Bukh in my '86 Contessa.  Halton Marine did an excellent job of fixing some compression issues and they got the parts from Crinmar in Kingston, Ont.  She runs like a charm and yes, it's amazing how little fuel is used.
Kevin.

I have pretty much decided to forget about the electric motor option (too many people advising against it).  I think I will just have my present engine overhauled this winter. Hopefully that will fix the compression issues and be cheaper that replacing the entire motor.

I am getting to that time where I need to repower/repair my Contessa 26. She has the original Bukh 8hp diesel and has compression issues.
I was wondering if there is anyone out there who has tried an electric motor.
Researching on the internet I read about people doing this in other boats, but no mention on this site. Any opinions?

Where do you have it located?
Mine is under the starboard quarterberth.  It was the flattest part of the hull we could find, but it is angled just a bit so the depth readings are off slightly. This becomes more pronounced in deeper
water, but for shallow soundings it works just fine.
Had it installed last winter and it worked very well all season.

Just my 2 cents worth, but my 8 hp Bukh gives me roughly 4 knots when the throttle is about 1/2 to 3/4.
Does sound like your prop/ engine needs some adjustment.

My STORM JIB for the Contessa 26 is still for sale.
In great shape. Hardly ever used. Made by Genco. I switched over to a furling jib and have no need for this sail.
Asking $300.

Also, I have a 'head sail bag' that you can keep the sail in while it is hanked on and off the deck. Very handy.  Asking $100.

cheers,  Kevin.

Just a quick followup to the above post by Ben Atkins.  I got my 86 Contessa ('Northern Spy") a year and a half ago and found that both hatches were leaking and the screens were in bad shape.
A quick call to Atkins and Hoyle and the parts were in the mail. The gaskets and screens were easy to replace and I am very happy.

I must say that the quality of the materials is very high. When I look at other boats in my harbour, I see very cheap port and hatch assemblies on bigger, more expensive boats (ports that don't OPEN, arghhh.  I like fresh air!).
Makes me glad that I chose a Contessa.

Cheers everyone, only 4 weeks before launch!

I have the cockpit cubby holes in my 86 Contessa, but  your photo makes me think, I don't have that wooden grate on the floor of the cockpit. Are they still available?
Any ideas on the pros and cons of these grates and where to get them?

Yahoo, I found it. It was in the battery compartment, just tucked up a little out of sight.
Thanks again fellas.

Thanks very much guys. I shall go looking tomorrow.
Offhand, I don't recall seeing such a valve in the battery compartment. Where does it connect to the engine? Maybe I can trace the hose back to the valve.

What does the strainer look like? Is there a chance that I already have one on a boat that spent most of it's time on Georgian Bay?

cheers, Kevin.

I have an 86 Contessa (Taylor) with an 8 hp Bukh diesel. Is anyone out there familiar with this engine? Where is the valve for the water supply to cool the engine?
To be more precise, the valve for the through hull, permitting water to enter and cool that beast down.

I am new to the group and very impressed with this website. The support and helpful tips are a great resource.

I bought my 1986 Contessa 26 last November after sailing in a friend's Contessa last summer. My previous experience has been in smaller boats (a Siren with 4 hp Merc) so you can imagine the amount of new stuff I have to learn. I will retire this June, so I plan to have loads of time to devote to this boat!
Any advise would be greatly appreciated! I will be sailing her out of Port Credit, and for a start, I will mostly be a day sailer, until I get my comfort level up.
Anybody in the area that would like to drop by, give tips and go for a sail, feel free to contact me.

A few initial questions:
1.  Batteries. For my type of use (day sailing) do I really need two batteries? I have to replace them and I was considering just using one 'dual purpose'. All I really need it to do is start the motor and run the VHF radio (maybe running lights at dusk)?

2. Also on batteries, I would rather not have to worry much about the battery so should I consider buying a GEL type? (more expensive, but less fuss?).

That's it for now. Thanks in advance for all the help.
cheers, Kevin.
