Thanks for the ukhalsey website, will check it out tonight.  So, a 6.5 oz sail coth is better then 5.93 oz sail coth.  I was not concern about price, though I do not wish to pay more then need be, but the quality of the sails I had quotes on.  What do others sail with and what are your thoughts.  I was leaning towards Scott Sails because of the sail weight for ocean sailing.  ~jklee

Adrian,  I am afraid our webpage is starting to be invaded with spam.  My sister had one of these people mess up a site like ours and eventually close it down.  I am unsure if we can do anything about it but the last person to sign up was a spammer.

What do you want to know?  We talk about everything there is on a Contessa 26, about her sailing, where to get ideas and items for a problem, you name it is here.  Do you have a Contessa 26 and is it a pre or post 1983 model, a bit of a design change happen then.  Are you inland, lake, bay, or Ocean sailing?  Tell us what interest you and we can help. jklee

Yes, a picture would help me understand the problem, though I think I am catching on after my 2nd reading.
On the folkboat, we are talking about that small part of the keel that covers the rudder bottom? (see gallery) comparted to JJT26 design (see gallery).  There is a JR 26 design picture in the gallery (storage solution - one) that shows their design that has a pintles at the bottom of the rudder?
For JJT26 we would put a steel plate attached to the bottom of the keel by "?" that protudes out just to the end of the rudder but not touching for protection?  Unsure about the attachment of the steel plate to the keel though.  ~jklee

What is you plans, redoing them or fixing them up?  Both of my hatches leak (cabin one leaks worriest and actually ruin the panel flooring I had that I now need to replace) and I am a bit unsure what course of action to take.  Thanks for the website, another site that should be put on the home page of this forum.  ~jklee

What are your future plans? In a past thread on sailing around Cape Horn, smh stated the following on the rudder:
8. Replace the overweight rudder (80-90 pounds) with a carbon filament reinforced casting (design goal 35-40#).
You can find this under Technical;Contessa 26 Cape Horn; smh #2.
Thought you might to think ahead if your redoing part of the rudder now.

I have put in my request for a quote from Lee Sail's (from their New England rep) for a Main Sail with 2 + 2 loose sail plus a storm, working jib and a gonoa 125%.  I like to know what the cost would be for all of them before I make final plans on new sails.  When I get the quote back, I will post it.

Since I am in this boat too, what is a 2+2?  I believe full batten are for racing sailboat, ie Spirit of Canada, as they go the full length of the sail to keep the sail shape stable.  Normal batten for us go only about half way to keep the leech shape.  I think I am correct but could be wrong.  jklee

The marine survey time line depends on the surveyor.  The survey I had done in on the boat that I passed over was 4+ hours as he was a good inspector.  The report took a week as he had a weekday job but the report was good.  I can send you a copy if you like to get a feeling what one looks like.  Just e-mail off line with your e-mail address and I will send you it plus another survey on the same boat.  This could be an eye opener on surveyors.  Since I am in the USA, Seeadler is the one to listen to on Canadian registration.  jklee

I was told the same thing when I looked at a boat last spring.  The guy may or may not know possible problems with his boat to tell you or not tell you.  This is all business with money involved.  A marine survey just may save you as it did me on that sell.  A survey will also tell you a mean value for the boat also.  Make sure you get a good marine surveyor and have the sails looked at also as old one can stretch, which I learned the hardway.  Survey will hopefully tell you what is needed fixing and what problems you may have to deal with before the boat goes into the water.  On closure, it was certified checks, half down and half after the papers were in order to hand over.  Others may have a better idea on this. jklee

Since I now have two old sails(20+yrs), main sail that is stretched out beyond use and the 110 genoa that needs repair in the seams, is there anything one can do with them? I have plans on getting new ones this spring.  I would think cutting up the old sails into smaller sails could be an answer?  Any thoughts out there on this or anything else that would be useful? cheers, jklee

Hey, you were a topic at the gathering as we talked about you Paratech Sea Anchor.  So, what else do you have in your deep closet of goodies?

Well the gathering was small  (9, though one left early) but we all had a great time.  The start of the gathering was a bit disorganized as some of us were at the southern of the Lake while others where next to the boat house lecture stage but Adrian got us all organized and together as a good website manage he is for this forum.  There will be a photo of the CO26 forum gang someday soon for all to see, Jose'.  Beers were drank and some spilled during our 4+ hours of talking.  We even learned that old head sail can stretch a whole lot after 30 years and some of us will be getting new ones this spring, at least I am. Seeadler told us stories of his ocean voyage that interested all of us while others compared to-do list for the up coming season.  Then there was windvane, backing out of slip, archors and other discussing going on to.

From this gathering, I was pressured to upload some photos of Cavendysh.  This has now been corrected though I do not know how to link them to this message, sorry gang.  Cavendysh is a bit embarrassed by her looks as her navigator made her so sailing before all her new equipment was put on her, thus the slowness on her putting herself on the forum for all to see, enjoy.  jklee

I am at the Holiday Inn in Oakville, end of the GO Train line.  I got one of the lower rates but it is higher then Sheraton low rate.  I will up there friday afternoon.

Sorry for the long absent, I was at my parent's place on island off of Maine with only dial-up service.  Anyway, on Saturday at 2pm at Boat House is a talk by Derek about his solo racing around the world.  It should last only an hour, as I saw it last year.  No Tania this year, sorry.  So if we meet in the Boat House, we will have to figure out a spot away from there.  My mind is foggy but there is food place opposed the seminar platform that might work.  On one end of the boat house is place they had music last year plus food (I think), not a good spot.  There is an exit on the south end (Lake Ontario side) that might work.  It is actually exit - hallway - exit to boat show, this hallway area could work as I could put up a Contessa 26  drawing I have on the wall for the gathering (help Adrian again on my up load of the design into the gallery did not work as it is on a word document and you have to click on it a couple of times to see it, sorry).  Any comments or better spot to gather? I am open to better spot if there is one.  The 2pm gathering sound like the magic moment for us.  Now I need to get a hotel room.  jklee

After a long stay at my parents, who have only very slow dial up internet service, I can reply.  I like to say it is great to see your name on the forum once again and the joy you put in all your messages.  Also, your boat looks great and if I can figure out a way, I like to get a similar color to my boat.  I am not one for white items.  Also, I just wanted to say, my "Cavendysh" is now a registered boat with the USCG, as I just got the offical papers in the mail.  Now I need to get to work on my list of boat's needs before spring gets here.  Anyway, Congradulation and I look forward to seeing your new boat blossum. jklee

Yes, "Thank You" for all the time you have given us in creating this forum.  Some of us will see you at the boat show, until then I hope Santa Claus is nice to you and your family.  jklee

So far we have 9 for January 13 (yes the right month this time).  The speaker list not yet up but mid afternoon is sounding the norm? 2'ish, The boat house the meeting place, as no one stated differently.  Afterwards, dinner? Now I will need help here as I am from NW Pennsylvania, so another vote is need to help me out:

***vote*** type of place you like to eat at, example: Italian, chinese, Irish, etc.
I vote for Irish/English.

addition info needed with vote:
1) Name of a place.  If you know one in the area and its location.  (make it simple as some of us are GO Train travelers, ie., me).
I have visited the area only once. So I could use help here on place to go.

2) Also tell us if it is a reservation place or not.

3) Any additional info need to help this along

Okay, why do we not vote on this, Dec 13 (saturday), all in favor say, "I".  All in disfavor, say "Nay" but please come up with an alternative or have a second gathering?  On the I's, what would be a good time to meet, 2 or 3pm or majority rules? Do we want to do something afterwards, ie, go out to dinner or whatever?  Sorry no speaker listing is up on the boat show website the last I looked.  My guess on meeting spot would be the boat house / lake at the show but others might know of a better spot.

The same here on just one bolt on the rear of the mast. Unsure why the front bolt is not used, but then if ones shrouds failed would this extra bolt be much good?.  I was told that I should have a cotter pin bolt system for the mast, not a screwed on one because of safety and easy removal of the bolt.  Anyone using this cotter pin for the mast bolt?  jklee

After thinking about my wish list, I feel a bit selfish. I have two friends, one on the west coast and one that wonders the shores of Georgian Bay that are chasing their dream to find a Contessa 26 they can look on with pride.  One was a great asset to this forum and the other wishes to ask lots of questions when they get their boat.  So my wish is for both of them to find their Contessa 26, who would look upon them been wondering why it has taken them so long to find her.

Though, having one of Santa's elves would be great.  I may be small by I am not on the other side to tighten whatever that is needed done.  Plus, like above I would love the carpanter version to help me with my 10 thumbs.  My father could build a house and all I can do is bend a nail after one hit.  So an elf with talent would top my list too after my friends boats are discovered.  Cheers,

Just a note to say my application for Registering my Contessa 26 came through today.  Thus, Cavendysh is finally registered boat outside of some paperwork I need to send the USCG.  So, a story with a happy ending, amazing.

Below is a reply to my e-mail about arranging a meeting for us at the Toronto Boatshow.  The question after you read this, where does everyone want to meet?  Boat house/Lake?  We have 4-5 weeks until the show.
------------------------------------------------------

The seminar schedule is being finalized this week and will be posted
next week on our website (torontoboatshow.com).

As for a meeting place... it depends if you would like to meet inside or
outside of the show.  If you are planning to meet inside, the Boathouse
Seminar Stage in The Lake is a good meeting spot as there are a number
of seats and it is relatively easy to find (once you find The Lake, the
Boathouse is very visible - The Lake is very identifiable on our
floorplan in the on-site show guide).
