I don't know about putting the mast up, but getting it down by hand on my boat took four big strong guys and it was pretty dicey.  I would definitely recommend a crane.
I do recall seeing a system online where someone could lower and raise the mast easily.  Luckily, I'm not too good at cleaning out the old stuff off my computer.  If I still have one I'll try to post a pic.

Looking at a boat in the Kingston area.  Any recommendations on a good surveyor??

Oh, so sorry loup30s.  No, I didn't put a sign on her.  I guess I should have.  Did you happen to be at the marina the day I (and 4 guys) took the mast down by hand??  Pretty good show!  :-)

Best of luck in your search. I highly recommend the contessa 26.  I miss her everyday....  but so happy she went to such a good home.

Sue

PS, hey, if you ever need crew I'm always looking for a chance to get out for a sail.

I got a Harken Mk IV furler put on my boat and I bought a new (to me) sail to go with it.  Works great!  Never a problem with it.  Suzeh

Sounds like quite an adventure.  Thanks for sharing.  I'm off to look for the pics on facebook.  Sue

I just tried the poliglow stuff mentioned earlier in this thread.  I'm very impressed!  My old dull boat is now very shiny and it is wasn't much work at all.  We'll see how she looks in the fall.  Suzeh

Too bad we missed you ivanross.  Maybe next year. There were some interesting seminars, although they had several last minute changes that were disappointing.

And, yes, in my marina there are about twice as many power boats as sail and I often marvel at how much they must be spending on fuel.  Different strokes..., I guess.  Personally, I dislike that noisy, smelly, banging over the waves.  If/when I get too old to manage the sailboat by myself, maybe I'd try a trawler...but I can't see the attraction of those big, gas-guzzling muscle boats.  Obviously, by the number of them at the show, there are plenty of folks who don't share my opinion.

Wow!  For a newby whose biggest fear is tipping over that was pretty spectacular to watch.  But I just love the way she soared up out of those waves....you go girl!  Note to self, though: stay away from shore with big crashing waves.  Yikes!

I'll be there on the 16th, probably mostly listening to the seminars.  If anyone else is around I'm up for a brew....seminar listening makes me thirsty.  3:00 sound good.  I noticed on the floorplan there is a little martini glass icon on the bottom right corner of the lake.  Is that where we're meeting?  Sue

I'll be there on the 16th.  I'll look for your son's booth, Adrian.  Suzeh

I'm here! I use this site almost like a manual for my new-to-me boat.  It's great! (except for the "expletive" spam).  Anytime I have a question I just use the search feature and almost always up pops the answer.  When it doesn't, I post and someone answers.  It's great!  Perhaps most of the common newbie-type questions have been answered??

Either way, Suselle and I had a great first summer together.  I got all the bugs worked out of her and she's sailing well ....and I think I'm starting to catch on too!  Next summer I hope to get down below all set up and comfy....new stove, head, maybe a table of some sorts....been reading up and looking at the pics in the gallery.  Questions to follow as the planning continues.....
Suzeh

Yes, I'm liking that anchor frame.  I'm lucky that Suselle came with it.  I'll ask around in Penetang/Midland for a recommendation on a place to get one built and let you know if I come up with anything.  Sue

After a lot of pruning and preening, I finally got Suselle up and running. Today I took her out for the first time ALL BY MYSELF!!!!!!! (which was a huge hurdle for me as I'm a novice sailor, and, well, kinda puny and no spring chicken AND I have some fear issues to get over).  She was flawless.  Me, not so much, but hey, I'm learning.  I did get her moving and it was a wonderful sail I'll always remember because it was my first.  I LOVE MY BOAT!!!!   I did take the time to record the big event -- check out the pic in the gallery.
A very happy Suzeh.

Would it be possible for you to move her South and sail in the winter??  Perhaps we could work out a boat swapping deal??   ...always scheming, me.   wink
Best of luck, John, no matter how it turns out.

Does anyone have pics of their jack line set up that they'd like to share??  Or suggest where I might find them in the gallery.  Nothing specific came up when I searched "jack line".  Suzeh

I just measured mine and the side berths are 6'8".  The V-berth is 6'3" right down the centre.  It is a 1985 boat.  I'm not sure if the berths vary in size or not.  Suzeh

Oh, that is bad news indeed.  I hope things work out for you and you're able to keep the boat.  It would be a shame to lose it after all you've put into it.  I noticed many boats around here are on the hard taking a break for a season.  Wet weather, bad economy, not a great season all 'round.  Perhaps you'll reconsider and just take a break until things settle down for you?
Either way, best of luck.  Hopefully, even if it does sell, you'll still stick around the forum to share all the knowledge you've acquired.

Tks for the advice!  Sounds easier to cut a little piece of wood off the end than the metal track.  My husband has got me all set up with the proper tools, the new Garhauer Low Lead Cars are on the way, so hopefully I'll be back to finally sailing this boat in a few days.

Give me a shout if you're in town for any more courses.

I purchased a new tiller online from ida sailor.  It is a thing of beauty....laminated 1/4 inch ash and mahogany strips.  The old one was worn with cracks....didn't look too reliable.  I'll keep it as a spare though.
