I have a need to move my boat from/to Beaufort, NC/Central NY.

Is there anyone (preferably in the eastern US) that could let me rent their trailer for the move, sometime this summer?

Wow!  Well reading about this on-going winter restoration will fill my chilly, NY winter nights.  Doing such a refit is amazing in itself, but having a web-accessible chronology of the step-by-step process, with pics, now, thats just holiday season eye candy!!!

Enjoy the adventure; I sure am.

Don

Did anyone happen to tape the segment of Nina and Henrik on their Contessa, the BIKA? It was aired recently and we had hoped that someone able to, would tape the show and put it on YouTube.

Start with #4.

Bill,

Thanks for the epoxy tip -- I was planning to gob it up with resin.

I was originally thinking of installing my tot on starboard; my Contessa doesn't have an ice box there, and I am making a home-made, gimbaled propane stove to go in that space; however, I would be interested in seeing your setup before I plug in the saws-all and begin chopping things up.  I have made several cardboard mockups this winter in my basement, trying to visualize various approaches.  Do you have any photos?

Well, over-sizing the hole & plywood donut, that's an easy enough solution, and would give sufficient insulation between the iron & deck.  I've planned on using elbows, and hope to mount the stove low, in a special, copper-lined cove area I will build in the port locker.  Looking forward to those chilly nights aboard.  Thanks

Group,

I bought a Tiny Tot wood/charcoal stove for my Contessa (hoping to expand my sailing season during cooler months in upstate NY this & coming years).  It takes a 3" stove pipe, and a 3" deck iron.  My question is related to the "type" of deck iron to use, and alternative ways of mounting thru deck.

There is a water bowl type, that you fill with water atop to help cool the iron.

There is a finned type, that  cools via air flow.

There is a solid (old type) brass iron.

Is there a way (no matter which one I use) to better insulate the deck iron from the deck to insure better heat protection just in case things get too hot during the night?

Cool!  I am not sure at present time if we will be able to get our Contessa (Over Draft II) from Oneida Lake to Toronto, but we could drive up if need be.  The BIKA crew is incommunicato in the far north for the winter, but we are starting to recieve packages from Norway for them, so I am sure they will be in touch with us about anticpated dates.  As we hear more, we'll post to this list.

Nina and Henrik, owners of the BIKA, are currently themselves, on the hard, in far northern Alberta, Canada, but anticipating spring and sailing around Lake Ontario/Toronto/1000 Islands, where they left the BIKA last September. They expect to be in that area from "end of May and one month ahead before taking the Trent-Severn Canal." Wondering if folks would be interested in a CO26 gathering. They aren't near a computer, let alone the internet, but you can contact us (Don and Geri in upstate NY) regarding the possibilities. Email is dkwagner@syr.edu, or geriw@twcny.rr.com.

BIKA is still tied up at Sylvan Beach, NY (Nina and Henrik are waitng to acquire their new kitten, Erie, who is getting shots and readying for immigration to world's beyond).  We have invited the BIKA crew for a sail aboard OverDraft II this evening, so they can compare the Jeremy Rogers designs, and propose a diplomatic evaluation to which one is faster.  Hope to have some pics soon.  However, we got rained out -- a huge storm settled down the lake just as we left port, and we had to turn back.  Yet Henrik gave us some good pointers about tuning our rig and adjusting tensions.  I have a feelling BIKA is well tuned and an intelligently sailed vessel, and the Overdraft crew has a lot to learn

BIKA arrived in Sylvan Beach last night, Tuesday, Aug. 14.  Nina and Henrik are thriving in their spartan vessel, and got to taste a bit of central NY home cooking.  And we got some video of BIKA motoring alongside OverDraft II on Oneida Lake, so life is good.  More details to come.

I got an email from BIKA on Friday, that they were heading thru the canal, so we've been on the lookout since.  My matee (Tony) and I tracked BIKA down this morning (by telephone, of all things), along the Erie Canal at Lock E15 at Fort Plain.  They are motoring towards Utica, NY tonight, and we hope to meet up with them in Sylvan Beach, NY tomorrow.  Tony called a number of the Erie Canal locks asking for sightings of BIKA.  One lock tender remembered seeing them past thru, and called another lock tender as BIKA was approaching. Tony was able to speak with Nina for a few minutes, and let them know we will be waiting for their arrival.  Maybe we'll get some pixs of OverDraft II alongside BIKA!  (afterall, OverDraft is a BIKA_wannabee.)

If cruising the Erie Canal, you'll eventually motor into Oneida Lake.  You can tie up overnight at Sylvan Beach (on the east end of the lake), and my mates and I will treat you to a dinner at the Crazy Clam.  Over Draft II is docked only a short distance away, so expect Contessa company.  Let me know your schedule.

Thanks for this info.  I'll be getting a closer look at under the stuffing box this Sat.  And I'll take measurements.  Also, glad to know that the pintles may just press out after drilling set pin.  I'll post an update after I take a closer look at all this with it cleaned up.  Doesn't seem as frightening as my look indicated.  Thanks.  Don

We hauled Over Draft II out this weekend.  I discovered a lttle bit of play in the lower brass gudgeon (w/ stainless pintle) -- probably about 1/16 " play.  The upper gudgeon/pintle seems tight, no play.  Being a newbie to all this, if I were to remove the lower gudgeon, what is the step by step procedure?  My goal would be to have a new one machined as a replicate of the original, or even bore it and put in a brass sleeve.  Is the "thru hull", lower gudeon bolted on the inside?  Does one just "unscrew" it using a large pipe wrench?  What's the best way to go about removing it without damaging the hull?  And, any pixs that anyone has of their gudgeon/pintles, I would appreciate.
