Hey John, what does your winter storage run at Portsmouth

Good point - also my boom was manufactured by Cinkle spars - and I am sure over the years they changed suppliers (hence could be different lengths)  - also the sail plan I have states it is the "Mark IV" one, so I am sure there are others.

I have also uploaded a copy of the sail plan (actually it was from 1983 ) in the technical gallery and it has all of the dimesions - lots of scribbles on it though.

Hope this helps.

On my original 1980 sail plan I have the boom at 10 feet 0 inches.

I agree, could not believe the number of power boats - plus the size of them.  My question is seriously, how can people afford the fuel, even for a weekend????  That has got to be very expensive.

And it is interesting to note, in the Thousand Islands, growing up in the '80,s I remember being at the national parks whereby the sail boats outnumbered the power boats - now when I go down, odds are I am the only sailboat there.

It will be sad if this trend continues.

My apologies guys - I could not find you - I was at Henery's until 3:20 quafing a few beers (right by where the guy was signing).

Oh well - next year ; -)

I agree, hardley any sailboats or sailing stuff in general - I guess the economy really does bite.

Cheers

I am good for 3:00pm on the 16th in the beer garden by the indoor lake.

Cheers,

Will be more than happy to keep your posted if I ever get my act together.  Stefan, I agree that would be a great job to start - sometimes I have this insane idea of buying up all of the Contessa 26's currently on the market and restoring them in a large factory setting and then selling them. Though of course I don't have the money and I am sure the costs would be prohibitive nor would there be a market or any profit ; -(

For Morava I need to completely rewire her - new engine, new hatch, new forhatch, new portwholes and new paint job on the hull and deck - some things to just start with.

Adrian - also just wanted to say - a great job with the site and thanks again for keeping it up and running.

Hi John - yep my CO 26 is the blue one.  Thanks for the compliment - I was lucky, given when my dad had her right out of the factory in 1980 he kept her pristine and so I have tried to follow that tradition ; -)

Cheers,

Actually, I did contact them - but I don't know how much Allan Nye is involved.  A person came up to Kingston to look at Morava, and I laid out all of my requirements but I could never really get a quote out of them after a series of calls.  So I left it at that.

But a good suggestion, I might try a follow up again.

Thanks Adrian - I will stop by that booth, I think I am heading down next weekend.

Cheers

Those are great sites, I actively followed the retoration of Equinox and he did a great job.  And I was even tempted to send Morava down there and get him to resore her but costs always get in the way.  And I keep on looking but can not findanyone In Ontario/Quebec who A) does the same sort of work and B) responds to my querys and 3)gives me a rough quote for costs.

Perfect timing, I just got my bill to - I keep my boat at Collins Bay and about two years ago they swicthed from the specific boat length to a set length's so my Contessa 26 is in the catgory of a boat 29 feet and under.

So for everthing - launch, mast stepping, summer docking and summer cradle storage the total with tax is
$1,903.13.  It is times like this that I am glad my Contessa is only a 26.

I remember in the early 80's when Portsmouth was actively subsidized by the city and the federal government and it was dirt cheap to keep a boat there.

Anyone going this year.

I think I am - have not decided if I am going this weekend or next?

That is very cool.  I wonder what year the boat was?

And I guess it went over due to a combination of to much sail and surf?

Very neat video.

Hi Marc - would like to help, but my boat is buttoned up for the winter and down in Kingston and I am in Ottawa, so I will not see her until the spring, but if you still need it then more than happy to help.

Cheers

Hi- that back plate has your registration number something like ZJT..... and then the last three digits are the boat number, and then it has something like: Built by JJ Taylor, Toronto, Ontario (then the year the boat was built).

Hi, I am indeed the one who bought the mains sail from KSL and had my main up this summer - ghreat sailing.  The great thing about KSL is that they are right there and will make any modifications you might need - I had a couple of measurements that where off and they fixed them right away by coming to the boat, so no hassel - hard to tell if you could get that kind of service form someone else.  And both Andy and John have been making sails for many years, so they are very experienced craftsmen.

Also I put in two reefing points and I agree, a third is not needednor did KSL recommend the need for one.  Plus, for the extra $500, you will not find a better hand made sail that will last for a very long time.  The expense is well worth every penny.  Part of that price also included some small fix up's with my jibs and genny.

I did have to replace my main sail cover, which I aslo got them to do, as the sail is stiffer and cut differently then the older version.  But the cover needed replacing anyway given it was 29 years old.

So I am one very satisified customer

Cheers,

Hey John – I know that must have been a very hard decision you made.

I know how you feel to some degree, I have not visited Morava in three weeks and I am regretting every second.  On my regular two hour drive to Kingston, sometimes I get frustrated because I can not spend the entire summer on Morava and therefore not keep her in the proper style – crazy eh.  Perhaps this is why we like sailing and these boats so much.

Apologies for the gratuitous “philosophizing”.  I hope you are able to enjoy the rest of the summer and that a Contessa, hopefully Cavendysh, is somewhere in your future.   As you know my dad sold Morava in 1990 and I was finally able to buy her back in 2003 – so it is possible, hopefully you will not have to wait thirteen years though.

And, if you ever need a sail and find yourself in Ontario and Kingston, drop me a line and I would be more than happy to take you sailing.

All the best,

Thanks for this.  Good catch on the fact that Yanmar is not producing the 1 cy anymore, this is a key factor in my decesion.  Rbporter I will check out Tim's site again on the engine installation, but I forget, did he have to move engine forward and off the current engine beds?

Cheers

I think parts are very hard to come by, I have had to have at least one part custome made.

Ah ha, now I get why people like the beta and perhaps the price of the Kubota was just the block.  Though I will check around with other dealers regarding the Yanmar - the price quoted was via a voice mail so perhaps I did not understand correctly or make myself understood when I left the message to get the quote.

I have to admit though that at that price, maybe I will continue to coax a couple of more years out of my Faryman.

Hi Stefan_d:

The quote came from International power Systems in Toronto.  Of course that figure did not include installation.  That would be great if we could meet up and I could take a look at your Yanmar.  And of course the invitation is always there to come take a look at Morava and her old Faryman.

It seems you also like the Beta, curious as to why, I do not know the difference between the two engines.

Cheers,

The Kubota is oil cooled.  A dealer in toronto called me back and quoted a price for the 1GM10 at $6,470.  SOmething is not right, perhaps the Kubota is not meant to be the poer plant for a sail boat - I can;t understand the $3,000 in price??

rbporter good luck with trying to figure out the lines for the main sail and for the reefing - I have the same problem - I have no idea as to what those lines are for but I have two on either dies that run through the boom.
I understand you out a Beta in Equinox - would you mind sharing the reasons as to why you picked that engine- just curious

Thanks.

I like the way you think.

So far the Kubota OC95 9.5 HP before taxes and installation is running at $3,420.  Will let you know once I hear about the Yanmar.
