So it seems time to put Polaris up for sale again. Perhaps I've forgotten about all the timewasters from the last time. In the last two years the engine mounts have been replaced and she has a new exhaust. My email has changed from the above to colethefarrier@hotmail.com.  Boat is in sailaway condition and she has an assumable berth in Sidney BC.

A guy in my yacht club runs a business arranging for boatowners to swap boats for vacations letting them sail in different areas for less than the cost of chartering. The concept got me thinking that Contessa 26 owners could arrange some great boat swaps taking into account how many boats are around and the wide choice of areas the boats are scattered over.

Swapping with another Contessa 26 owner gives you the advantage of knowing the boat you are getting into even if the sailing grounds are different. I'm sure a lot of North Americans would love to sail in Europe or the U.K. (or even other parts of North America) and likewise there must be some U.K. or European owners who would like to sail the Great Lakes or the Pacific or Atlantic coasts.

Boatswaps would not have to happen at the same time, in fact it is advantageous to have the boat owner around while the visitors are on the boat to give support and advice. Here in Canada our insurance covers lending our boats to anyone we decide is capable so there's no additional expense....I'd be interested to learn how that works for owners in the U.S or U.K.

So I'm putting this out to all as a suggestion for any feedback. Personally its been years since I sailed the South Coast of England or the West of Scotland and if this could work I would be happy to try it. My home sailing grounds are the Gulf Islands on the Pacific West coast of British Columbia if anyone has ever wondered what sailing in these sheltered waters is like.

As fate would have it I've ended up taking Polaris back again. Long story involving ill health of buyer, my proposed new purchase falling through and wanting her to go to a good home. She's still available if anyone wants her and I'm fairly open to offers. Not in a rush as I've not got something else to buy. What was I buying originaly? A Contessa 32.

Too late. She's gone.

Polaris (Hull 41) 1972 is now reluctantly up for sale. last two years has seen standing and running rigging all upgraded and replaced. Harken roller furling fitted with new Tan Sails last year. Garmin GPS fitted with charts and depthgauge. New compass. Too much to mention here but she is a well maintained classic boat cruised and raced gently(with a handicap of 295 who is in a rush at the start of any race). She is all set to go with a berth in Sidney BC that can be taken over at $2200 pa. Looking for $18000 obo.  Call 250-415-2653 or email cole-h@telus.net

Kristin, Best buy right now in GPS are Garmin monochrome screen GPS/Sounder units like the 188 or 168. Nearly everyone(like WestMarine) is selling them off at 60% or 70% off as they are discontinued but you'll get a full warranty and if they fail you'll get a color one to replace it. Good deal if its what you're after. Whatever you go for Garmin units are definitely the popular choice.

Well Gadget to answer your question you must be crazy. Why does anyone add a dodger to a Contessa 26 when all it does is ruin the beautiful lines of the design. How can you guys can sleep at night? If you want a motorsailer buy a motorsailer.

If you are looking for top quality sails at a reasonable price look at the British sailmakers. The Canadian Dollar is under $2 to the pound right now and by exporting the sails you pay no British taxes.
I bought a new performance main($1200) and furling genoa($800) recently from Ivan Bole at Arun Sails in the UK and can't recommend them highly enough(www.sailmakers.com). Ivan made me a performance main in Tan when no one around here would. Try getting Tan sails in Canada and they want to charge extra.
Yes it is scary doing your own measurements and hoping the sails won't come cut short, but mine came perfectly sized and made. If you have a Rogers boat the sails are usually smaller so the price would be less.
Tip for buying in England....order during the London Boat Show(first 2 weeks in Jan) or the Southampton Boat Show(first two weeks in Sep) and get the discount rates they give at show time.

George I've seen Virunga. What happened to her rudder? You must have a story to share.

I just applied for my PHRF-NW rating and got a NFS rating of 295. The handicapper told me the ratings vary as they take into account sailing conditions in different parts of the country. May be true?

Just had to share this. Had my 1972 JJT Polaris lifted out for a paint job and to attend to what looked like huge blisters when they were underwater. I'd been saving up to do this for the last two years.
Turned out the blisters were just the old paint coat lifting up and the hull is still dry as a bone, solid as a rock and as good as new. 33 years old. Amazing. I love this little boat. I might have to spend the money on a new sail for her.

I have what I am told is a 1972 and as far as I know none of the older boats had Hull numbers. I have no numbers on sails as the originals are long gone.I'd love to know more if anyone has a JJTaylor source.

Not a bad idea. i just saw a Contessa 26 advertised for US$5500 in MA. One with less equipment and upgrades sold in BC in July 2005 for CAN$21000. No reasoning to these prices??
