I like 291 Sika for almost everything. On wood boats I have bedded decks, deckbeams, rails of all sort, laid deck seams ,and hardware. It needs a primer with oily wood.I have had hit and miss results beddind oak but still use it.Cleans up with methyl hydrate but retards the drying if you use a lot.It is tenacious but with patience and an exacto knife most things can be removed again. The company has specific products for different things but I like that one.Don't wear something you like within ten feet of that stuff once it is open.Have to try the glove idea.

Oh also as it has:nt been mentioned ,two blade, less drag, three blade more efficency.I like the two blade.I would think the smalll motor, given the same reduction would have a better relationship of diameter to pitch so maybe I am not experiencing the same difficulties as others. It would be interesting to hear from those that have repowered if there has been a change in the low speed handling characteristics of thier boats.Maybe a three blade or less reduction would be desirable with more power. Is there someone out there who "knows".Bilge

Re: To Do List (11 replies, posted in General Questions/Comments)
I have always had these full keeled boats and they all behave much the same way under power, but the small power and crowded aperature add a few quirks. When you first put the boat in gear tier is very turbulet water flowing over the hull and likely not much over the rudder so the propeller acts much like a sideways paddle wheel.More throttle exacerbates the situation. Some wind and current can make things impoible, especially with the cut away forfoot.Diameter is desirable in a propeller for a displacement hull as (I believe)you don't get the bite with hi pitch, low revulutions.I don't know if more pitch walks the boat sideways.Merry Christmas,Bilge

The Propeller Handbook,Dave Gerr.If you resist goosing the throttle before the boat has stern way the walk will be very small.

The charttable door is a really neat idea, but there may be two problems. One,my boat has a bi-fold door which may be the only way to go forward and still open the door, short of clambering on to the berth. Two,the chart box may have to be inset as it is much tighter feeling up there with the door in place. It really is tight.A really great idea if you can work out the door operation.

Re: Nav station (11 replies, posted in Repairs/Modifications/Upgrades)
I have much the same idea golliwobbler, but ditching the head altogether and putting a box in there to hold paper charts and pilotage books.Taking the seat thing a step farther I might build a pivoting A frame (stainless) witha stool type seat that would allow one to work in the galley or at the chart box and could be partially folded away into the hanging locker.Still working thru the possibilities .It might be possible tobuild a track that allows a chart table to slide out from the top of the quarter berth space much like a bread board so the space is still usable.I use the table for navigation which I seem to do little of in any case as most hazards are easily avoided on this coast especially if you travel mostly in the day time.My biggest worry is other vessels on auto pilot and as B.C. ferries can't even avoid islands it seems ;I don't count on being seen by other vessels.(a little rant)

My understanding is that if the country of origion is not part of ,I believe N.A.F.T.A.,then you pay duty, and not sure about taxes or if the common wealth is included in that umbrella.I was going to have to pay duty on a swedish folkboat out of the U.S. if I had completed that deal.Interestingly I paid sales tax but not G.S.T. on two registered vessels I bought in B.C.,and on the contessa I think it was sales tax and G.s,T. on the brokers commision.Maybe every province is different.

Because of the wine glass hull sections there is little volume under there so that is probably not a configuration that would work well.I assume the berths contribute to the longnitudal stiffness of the hull, but how much? You can only stuff so much into such a tiny boat.

Looks nice.Is it anchored in Quidi Vidi. The best deals on these boats seem to bein central Canada. If you are out on the margins as you and I are ,I think you pay a small premium for a desirable and reputable vessel as you never know when one will come on the market.Traveling to buy or look at another boat must be factored into the cost.As it turned out Three others came on the market here soon after I bought mine and the two nicest sold fairly quickly.,as did mine.My attitude is that when the right thing comes along, act, cause a couple of thousand this way or that is peanuts in the big scheme of things, when you have added annual moorage, hauling, maintaince and insurance. This comes to over a third of the purchase price of my boat every year.Mine was 18,ooo but came with less gear.Completing the basic outfitting was surprisingly expensive when things like charts are over 20 bucks each and you must, absolutely still have them .Still, looks like a nice boat for the 2o,ooo range, but what do I know.I hope to get back to your neck of the woods eventually to do some crusing.Cheers Bilge

Getting my icebox out was a real pig.I had the big one and after finally freeing it had to cut it in two to get it out the door.Glass is new to me ,so after trying various tools the best was an angle grinder with a 5inch Walther zip wheel.I have not seen this mentioned as a repair tool but it cuts fast and straight with the least amount of dust, plus it will zip off unsupported bits that are very difficult to cut with a saw.Of course there is always some place it won't fit. There are some super cheap Chinese brands of grinder that will last a long time for occasional light duty work, making it worth while for some one doing a variety of projects on thier boat.Azip and grinder can be had for less than forty bucks.

They have jammed alot into such a small boat but it mostly works well.I moved the sink aft and the stove forward, because I think it works better that way.Aperson could consider putting less in this boat,i.e. just a pair of berths and a galley flat whereever you like, however I would do it much the same unless I was considering a junk rig at the same time.

You need to stay on top of varnish:a coat in the spring and a coat in the fall,touch-ups on wear spots.Varnish is fairly hard.It can fail at funky or stressed joints.I am still using it.

Re: need help with Force 10 stove gimbals (7 replies, posted in Repairs/Modifications/Upgrades)
Even though I built all this stuff into the boat, already I forget what the bits looklike. There is a picture in one of the boat adds on the forum, but it is a bit small.I think it has two mounting holes in the bottom of the fixed part. These could likely be attached to a pair of nicelly rounded 2by2s and these screwed to the bottom of the alcove. The stove should take up most of that space.I hear origio has a website. They were about $135. in Victoria, which felt like a whack but they are so clever and they bolt right up so that it only took about 0 seconds to decide to go that route.Good luck.

Re: need help with Force 10 stove gimbals (7 replies, posted in Repairs/Modifications/Upgrades)
One thing about the Origio gimbals is that they allow the stove to be lifted pulled forward and rested on the bottom of the alcove, while still secured. This allows the lid to swing back far enough to extract the canister for filling, something to consider in the design. The factory design is hard to improve on,but the instructions are something else. They arent difficult to install.

Re: anyone know the headroom on the post 1983 models (7 replies, posted in Technical)
One problem with lowering the sole is that the berths remain at the same height. The height to depth ratio is important, plus you want your feet to hit the floor.....The cockpit floor in these boats was raised early on giving the boat some not so comfortable ergos because the ratio probably changed. The shallow benches should have relatively more drop,at leasst thats what I think.Sometimes when you change one thing something unexpected changes. One huge advantage of a boat with a low deckline and coach roof is that the ports are at eye level so you have an ever changing view when anchored, not to mention that you can disembark from your dinghy without a stepladder. Why mess with almost perfection?

It's rather expensive, but you might be able to use an electric clutch to disengage the alternator.A three stage regulator should also drop the load,I think, when you are topped up.Does any one know if you can use a three stage regulator on the Farryman.A photo of the shaft driven alternator would be really interesting to me.

The Contessa is written up in the Classic Boat this month. Also compared with like in the Practial Boat Owner?(British) about two months ago. They get a fair bit of ink in that mag.I note as well that the Origo fared well,#2,twice in Practial Sailor, and no I don't buy all these mags but we have a pretty good libary in Victoria.

I have to go on port tack to fill the stove.I like winter sailing with the stove going.Everyone always wants to sit in the hatchway.(On my old boats anyway).
