I just got my letter back from the USCG rejecting my regristation of my Contessa 26.  They stated that "Only vessels of at least 5 net tons wholly owned by a citizen...."  The net of the boat is 4 tons, so how does everyone else get regristered with the USCG with their 4ton net boats?  I know of two boats regristered, one being Varuna.  May I ask now many of us USA contessa 26 are regristered with USCG and year it was done?  I will have to call these people on this issue and that is going to be a pain.  Thanks for you help.

I just got back from my second sailing day with my new Contessa 26 on Lake Erie.  I am still learning how the boat handles but she sails great in the rough seas I have been in so far.  I sailed with only a headsail due to the winds between 15 - 20 knots (gust unknown) and healing between 20-30 degrees in 5-6 foot seas. I used bungee cords to self-steer on a close-reach, though playing a little with the headsail, I could go to beam reach.  On  broad reach to run, I had to take over the tiller.  On using the mailsail,I like a bit calmer day just to get use to it but I might have to bit the bullet soon if I am go to use it this fall before I have her pulled out. The hardest part in my sailing experience is getting in and out of my slip with a strong wind, as I tried 5 times day to get into my slip this afternoon before having to ask for assistance.  I have to think up a way to dock with more guide ropes to help me out and not bang up the boat in the process.  I was lucky to have someone around to help me today.  Doing things solo has its draw backs at times.  Last Saturday, I sailed but it rained most of the time (Seas 3-4 feet, winds 14-15 knots - my guess) I was out but then it stopped when I got back in my slip, Murphy's Law playing with me;-)  Next weekend, I will be out there again enjoying my boat in whatever weather given us.  Just wanted to tell someone I had fun today, thx

Question on reefing, I have a post-1983 and have been looking at my boom as it sits on top of my desk today.  This monday I will be actually putting the boat in the water and gtting the rigging up. My boom has a 3-levers system at the gooseneck that press down on the different reefing lines but how does one actually reef, I keep asking myself and where does one tie off the different lines.  I am use to a reef line coming out of the boom back to a cleat on the boom that one pulls down on to tighten the reef line before tieing it off on the boom.  My guess is that I am missing something very simple but would like some hints on understanding the system.

I just wanted to thank everyone who helped me here, as my new genoa lead blocks are on my boat.  I hope to put them to use very soon for at lease a few weeks on Lake Erie.  Also, this site has helped out on other items, as I re-read past comments on different types of equipments others have on their Contessa 26.  Thanks again.

When I did the trip, the cost was only 1-way.  I talked about this with a long-hualer out west (Nevada) and he stated the longer the trip, the cheaper the cost, around $2.00/mile (we were looking at hauling a small wildland fire engine back to PA).  There could be some miscellaneous cost, but that is the haulers request if needed.  The hauler will then look for a load on the other end and in these days with the internet, this is not a problem I am told for both the hauler or the one needing a hauler.  The only problem needs could be special permits or if item is oversized.  When I hauled my Contessa, I needed neither of them.  Remember there is a shortage of long-haulers so there is hauling needs almost every where one goes.  Just my thought.

When I moved my boat, the cost was 10cent x lenght of boat x miles to new harbor, thus $2.60/mile and this guy was recommended buy the marina I was getting the boat from.  I had a very short time on setting up this move due to work comments senting me west on a detail job.  Hope this helps. jklee

You know you will be going through the heart of JJT Contessa 26 when you travel the Great Lakes!  There are dozen or so just on Lake Ontario and I sail out of Dunkirk, NY on Lake Erie.  We should have a gathering along your route to share stories.  Good luck on your sailing north.  jklee

When I was in Florida sailing, our club used a bag that one stored the head sail in when at dock.  They called it a Yankee Bag.  The bag was connected to the headstay at the bow.  Kind of like a main sail cover but a bag.  It was nice not to have to take down sail and store inside tha cabin.  Anyone heard of this type of sail bag and where one might find one for sale?

I have a new, still in the box GPS unit: Garmin GPS 128 with manual.  Yes it is vintage but never used. I am not a GPS type person yet.  It listed for $300 in 2001.  So $100 or Best Offer plus shipping $10.

Also have a JJT trailer for a Contessa 26.  It has rust on it but is in good shape, came with the boat, $1,200.  Presently in Dunkirk, NY, 60 miles south of Buffalo.  I have one photo of the trailer if requested.

I believe you are looking at the JR Contessa 26 (UK) version not the JJT Contessa 26 (Canada) version, if you are wondering.  I have a color version of the JJT I made months ago, if you like it.  I designed it for a t-shirt that never materialized.

I will try one more time.  May I ask what type of genoa lead blocks you have on your Contessa 26?  I have found the following: Lewmar "Ocean series" size 0, Harken genoa lead car H249, and Ronstan Series 19.  Are there others and any thoughts?

I am wondering if anyone has replaced their genoa lead block or genoa track slides with snatch block and what they replaced them with.  As I am having to replace mine due to they have seen the sunrise one too many times and parts of the plastics on them are breaking off.  Any thoughts?

I am in the process of buying a Cape Horn windvane and wondering if anyone wanted to get one as there is a discount with2 or more buyer (Chris T. conversation with the owner - see above).  The discount is as following:
for 2 people 10% ($302 USD), for 3 15% ($453USD), for 4 20% ($$604 USD). That's considerable savings for such a precision instrument.
If interested, you can e-mail me off-line.

Shannon,  Sorry for the lost of Rhiannon.  I had hopes he would have backed out at the last moment.  If you do head back east maybe this forum could put togther a gathering in someplace Ontario and talk about our favorite boat one weekend evening.  It would not be a rendezvous but it be the next best thing;-)  Anyway, if I can be of any help, just ask.

The last/highest number I can come up with is #352, Sarah in eastern Canada someplace.  Their should be 400 contessa's so we are missing 48 of them from our regrister.  Thanks for getting the HIN.

Adrian, what is going on with the Google map.  We use to see photos, listing of new boats thus figuring out who was new, and other misc stuff.  I hope the map is not eating all the photos;-)
