I will be posting info/pictures about the electric drive as soon as I get time to pull things together.

I have a 6.5 HP Petter diesel with Hurth HBW 10 transmission that has new rings, bearings, seals, gaskets, valve job,  head and deck resurfaced.  It has the original fuel injector and pump but I have a new injector and pump that will go with the motor.  Comes with brackets and mounts, shaft coupler, and prop.  I also have the a single handle control with cables that will got with it plus an other miscellaneous pieces that I have.  It was overhauled over the winter of 2005/2006.  I used it in my Contessa during the summer of 2006.  Last winter I decided to convert to an electric drive and it has been working well so I am looking to sell the Petter.  It runs great and is very reliable.  I am looking for $900 for it(I have more than that into parts).  Ideally pick up would be preferred but I could strap it to a pallet and load it onto a truck as long as buyer makes arrangements.  Shipping costs are the responsibility of the buyer.  E-mail me for pictures.  I am listing here first, but if it does not sell soon, I will be listing on eBay.  If you have an interest, contact me soon.  Thanks and let me know if there are any questions.

Mine had the cracking sound and it turned out to be a bad bulkhead with rot on the bottom.   The bottom inch and a have had no substance and was effectively no longer attached to the boat so when you walked on the deck or cabin at that point it would flex down.  The bulkheads are actually relatively easy to change since they are screwed in instead of glassed in as in other boats.  I ended up replacing my aft bulkeads with a beam and posts to open up the interior of my boat.  I then installed a stove with oven on the port side where the hanging locker was and am going to install a nav table where the head was( head will be moving into the v-berth area).  So pay close attention to the bulkheads when you view the boat.  If they are solid, then you may have delamination problems in the deck.

Christopher,

I also have the Petter 6.5 diesel in mine which I rebuilt this winter.  What did you use for the mount replacement?  Where did you get them?  Thanks.

Jose,

You can ususally get Blaster from most automotive parts stores.  I found it usually took about 1-3 days depending on the extent of corrosion.  I don't think yours should take too long since it is not corroded enough to keep the engine from turning over.

The standard practice to check if your low compression is from rings or a bad valve is to check compression(you will need a setup for a diesel).  If it is low compared to specification, shoot some oil into the cylinder and crank over to distribute the oilo over the rings.  Recheck compression.  If it jumps substantially, you have a ring problem(oil has helped to seal around rings).  If it does not, you probably have a bad valve.  If it is the rings and it is because they are stuck in their grooves in the piston, I have good luck with a product call Blaster.  It is a super penetrating oil that I have used to free up gasoline engines that have built up a light layer of rust and would not even turn.  Good luck.

John,

Those forms are what I used and have a gross tonnage of 5 and net of 4.  I will take the forms into work tomorrow since my scanner at home has died.  You should be able to use the measurement data from my simplified measurement form along with you boat data to submit a good application.

John,

I registered my Contessa with the Coast Guard last year.  I used a commercial service which I would not recommend since their incompetence cost me about a month and a half of sailing time(a long story).  If you want, I can scan and e-mail you copies of my application paperwork which was acceptable.

Mine is 60" overall length and has a slight curve(up about 1" in the middle from the ends).  Also it is about 1-1/4" wide by 1-1/2" tall at the end.

On the subject of moving the chain plates outboard to clear the passage to the foredeck, wouldn't the lower shrouds obstruct the way?  It seems to me that you would want to move the upper shroud chain plates out and move the lower shroud chain plates in(probably to the cabin sides) of course with additional reinforcement to carry the load to the hull.  Just a thought.

Can anyone help me with a parts supply source for Petter diesel engines?  I have sent e-mails to a couple of places that list Petter diesels with no response.  This weekend I sent an e-mail to the US distributor for Lister-Petter and am still awaiting a reply.  Does anyone have firsthand knowledge of a source of parts for Petter engines?  Thanks in advance for your help.

I have a 1976 JJ Taylor Contessa 26 with a Petter 6.5 HP diesel.  Can anyone tell me what oil should be used in the transmission and how the marks on the dipstick should be interpreted?  The dipstick has two holes drilled thru it and a groove towards the bottom.  Thanks in advance for any help.

Dave,

Thanks for the info.  Just one more question, is it a two or three blade?  Thanks again.

Can anyone tell me what the correct/original prop size would be for a Contessa 25 with the original Petter 6.5 HP diesel?  Thanks in advance for your help.
