Topic: Blisters! (0 replies, posted in Repairs/Modifications/Upgrades)
Three fair sized blisters along bottom up against the encapsulated keel...ground out and reglassed/epoxied, etc. Looked for an existing thread, but search turned up nothing (which is a good thing!). Anyone have any insights, comments, similar experience (besides Stan of course...feel for you Stan!).
...edit...except of course for the thread three below this one. There goes my claim for being highly perceptive.

Re: depth finder (7 replies, posted in Repairs/Modifications/Upgrades)
One of my books...(100 things that work, or 200 easy things to improve the boat, or something) has a method of installing a depth finder WITHOUT holing the boat. Essentially, using a proper sized PVC pipe, glued to the inside of the hull, with the depth finder mounted on it, and the cavity fully filled with stable liquid and sealed, the depth finder works fine (assuming the hull is solid and onsistent - a fair assumption on our blue water beauties).
If interested, I can find it for you...I've got one installed with a thru hull already, but if I were to redo it, I'd give this serious consideration...

Re: Access and repair of holding tank leak (7 replies, posted in Repairs/Modifications/Upgrades)
Ian....I have been blessing my lucky stars for my wonderful leaking holding tank since reading your post of late last week. Your situation makes mine look like a dream.
My no-name-yet hull 313 is a 1984, with the holding tank in amidships under the cabin sole. I think many more have their holding tank up under the v-berth, thus the suggestions for conversion to a bulkhead - good idea though. I think Ian's words of wisdom may be the way to go, and the steps laid out permit me to punt at anytime and go with storage, porta-potti or whatever fork looks best at the time. Thanks all for your ideas and kind words. You all are a great crew.
Tom

Re: Access and repair of holding tank leak (7 replies, posted in Repairs/Modifications/Upgrades)
ok...after closely looking at the problem, my reaction is....yuck. Geting over that, I am now seriously considering ripping out the whole mess (head, hoses, holding tank) and replacing it with a Thetford porta-potti. Benefits seem to be 1) ease of access, care, and maintenance, 2) recovery of some lost storage behind head and under v-berth where the hoses reside and under cabin sole where holding tank is, 3) longer term - reduction of holes in the boat by 2. Besides, it much more closely mirrors, but is an improvement over, what I do now...rely on the bucket.
Anyone do this or have any feedback for or against?

In Maiden Voyage, Abei reports that she and her father made Varuna unsinkable, or attempted to. Has anyone made improvements along these lines, have suggestions or is there a thread out there already on this?

Dear Santa, please stuff one of your little elves in my stocking so I have someone who can get easily into tight spaces. Even better, make it the one who is also good at building your wooden toys so I can put him to work on the cabinetry and other woodworking which would oh so improve conditions. By the way, what do elves eat?
If you can spare a second, leave the one who does the mechanical trains and such so I have someone to lovingly care for the farymann. That one always gave you grief about not converting from reindeer power anyway, so I am sure he won't be missed.

Re: Nav station (11 replies, posted in Repairs/Modifications/Upgrades)
Wonder if anyone has tried this....I am planning on removing the board which backs the head and conceals the hoses for same and reinstalling on a pivot at the base, permitting both better access to these parts and the board to drop down into a table (over the head). Will buildout a small seat resting over edge of opposite bottom of wet locker "oval" (likely removeable so that I can use same on bottom hatch board or as a small table surface on the trim around the sink area, if I can get the engineering right)...with better positioned lighting, a few adds for holding charts and small instruments, will have a nice place to snug in firm in a blow for navigation...
Thoughts?

Thanks

Topic: Gettingto the 2nd battery compartment under the sole (0 replies, posted in Repairs/Modifications/Upgrades)
1984 JJT #313...I have a first starter battery under the sole, and a second systems battery under the starboard settee. There is an already installed battery compartment right behind the starter battery, another foot closer tot he engine, but it appears fully glassed in from the top (no access panel like the first), and there are two knees/braces designed to keep the pair in place between the first and the second (now empty) battery compartment.
I'd love to get back the sotrage room and the better placement/security of course by using the second under sole battery compartment, but cannot seem to get a battery back into it over the knees. The entire install appears to be original (the dual compartments, the glass work over the second, the knees between), so it would seem that it was built with this peculiarity, and likely why the prior owner just put the second under the starboard settee. But it doesn't seem possible that it is a engineering/construction oversight. Anyone else have this issue, and if so, what'd you do?
