I agree, will start with 4 and I do plan to sail her all summer. I agree, these projects are only as good if you get the sailing time to enjoy them.

Okay - I know this is a silly question, but can't help asking it all the same - if you were to make changes to your boat - as a start - what would they be?
My preliminary list is as follows
1) new hull paint - above and below the water line.
2) new deck paint is possible or new gel coat.
3) overhaul engine - she is leaking oil, blue smoke etc... but still runs good for a 1980 Faryman.
4) find and fix all leaks on deck.
5) new forehatch.
6) revamp and fix electronics - crazy stuff in there - none of my stuff (depth and knot meter) works except the CD player.
7) all new sails (they are 28 years old) - new main, staysail, and no 1 genoa.
8) new interior cushions.
9) do I need to re rig - I don't know?
I think as a start that is it - and perhaps this is already over budget - I am starting to get quotes - will let you know how that turns out. Any other suggestions - in that, am I focusing to much on the cosemtic and not enough on the structure - a complete survey was done 4 years ago and no blisters or osmosis (except in the rudder which was fixed) so I think the hull is in pretty good shape.

I did google him, and I remember going through his web site on Gilissandro - that guy does some really nice work and very creative ideas and even though I am not a fan of the Tritons, I sure could be given how he has fixed them up. Too bad I am up her in Ottawa, would have seriously contemplated giving him a call - that would be something two contessa's side by side getting refit.
Good luck with the project, really looking forward to seeing how she turns out and all the before and after pictures. Also, if you don't mind, when you do come to that decesion, can you let the forum know what you are doing exactly - what is the list of things you are going to get done - I might cheat and borrow some ideas from you.

Hi all:
I am seriously thinking of completely overhaling Morava after this sailing season. That means new paint on the hul, new ports, new hatches, sails, perhaps a the spars, redoing the deck finding and fixing all leaks, adding a windlass, new interior such as a gimballed stove, perhaps fridge, lockers etc... And perhaps a new engine.
So given there is no way I can do all of this with my limited abilities, does anyone know of a any good boat yards in thr kingston toronto areas that could take on such a project withou making me go bankrupt.

I have a 1980 and I do not have those cubby holes, but have noticed them on boats after 1983/84. I can't see it being a sctrutral issue given it is hollow fiberglass - it shouldn't weaken that part of the mould. I was thinking of doing the same thing - I would think they would make excellent storage pockets for lines, whinch handles, and perhaps even the occasional beverage.

Well then, I am going to make a decision (which of course helps me ; -)
So lets set the date for Friday August 3, 2007 until Monday August 6, 2007 (or there abouts). Initial meeting point is Collins Bay Marina - and then we can decide where to go from there (Kingston/Thousand Islands/Lake Ontario etc...).
Morava is more than willing to put up others if the distance/time is too much.
FYI - I will be out of touch until next week - so let me know who is still intereted.

Hey - I just put Morava in the water only to have her pulled again because of the freaking stuffing box - it has to be repacked - typical eh - I thought I could get away with it for one more season.
As to the time and location how is this date: June 29 to July 1 - we can meet on the Saturday depending on the day that is the Canada Long Weekend.
Or we could do later in the season on the August long weekend: August 3 to August 5.
As for location, I am scuppered also as for time, I don't think I can make it down to Bronte but since most of you are down there perhaps I can invite myself along ; -)
Or we can meet in Kingston - I have two free passes at Collins Bay and people are welcome to stay on Morava.

I thought I would see if anyone was still interested in the lake Ontario get together. I am a little bit behind in my launch plans - I hope to have Morava in the water by next week as I get her trucked down to Kingston from Ottawa.
Open to suggestions as for date and time - a long weekend might be good and of course more than happy to meet up with people if they are coming this way to Kingston and the Islands but of course I am more than happy to head the other way - as long as my engine does not give up the ghost - then again I have a sailboat.
Also, if anyone is looking for a free ride to the rendezvous (those who can't get their Contessa to Lake Ontario) - drop me a line.

Hi - another perspective here - I am 5' 10" and yep it can get a little cozy in the cabin. However, depending on the model year you are looking at, the builders added a second hatch on the coach roof to give more ventilation and depending on the modifications, such as adding a table etc... there is a way to work comfortably inside. My father who owned the boat before me, was 6'2" and 250 pounds - so a big guy - but he was able to sleep comfortably and function in the cabin on those rainy days with a me and my mother (though it was cramped).
On the sailing aspect, the Contessa will not be the fastest boat out there, but sailing on the Ottawa river, on a good day, Boats tend to get jammed up on the same tack due to the lack of river room and I have always noticed that I am able to point closer to the wind than many of the boats out there - that is something given my sailing skills are pretty basic.
I am taking the boat back down to Lake Ontario at Kingston, where we originally sailed her and I have always felt comfortable and safe on her even when one is caught in a storm. Like any boat, there are draw backs, but for my money a Contessa 26 is really built for solid sailing and the living arrangements can be adjusted (even with the lack of headroom) to ensure one is comfortable.

Okay - so I am new at this game. Sailing on the Ottawa River - all I have ever needed was one chart and that of course was the kind I could fold seven different ways. And after sailing on the Ottawa for more than a year, you don’t even need that - even when I ran aground and sheepishly dug the chart out, the hazzard was not marked.
However, as I take the boat back down to Kingston this summer, I have to get new charts - so do I invest in the paper ones or go the whole hog and get a laptop, GPS and by the software? I do plan/dream to do some cruising of the great lakes and perhaps further afield at a later date.
If I go for the electronic kind, is there anything people recommend for Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence?
