Just a further note. On my boat the drain pipes are crossed which prevents (or lessens) any water from back flowing into the cockpit when heeled over.

No they don't look like anything on my boat. Judging from the appearance of the bends, I'd say they're homemade and probably part of some unfinished project by the previous owner. I topic I know much about I might add.

If you only have the anchor and steaming lights on your mast, it's possible that there is a separate negative (ground) for each light. If you have a tri-color mast light (as well as a steaming light) then you probably have a shared negative wire. In either case a test of the continuity from each bulb socket to the connector at the base will tell you. Another note, if you have LED bulbs, keep an eye on the polarity of the sockets. a lot of LED bulbs and light fixtures are polarity sensitive (only work one way).

some heavy test fishing line like spider wire is braided and might be suitable

Hi Peter
I've always thought a rubber strip, cut from an old tire for example, fastened to the bottom of the keel and overlapping the rudder gap would be the best solution to prevent catching a rope. The rubber, unlike anything metal, could not be permanently bent and would not interfere in the rudder operation in the case of a grounding.
My older Contessa has only 2 pintles/gudgeons, 1 above the waterline and 1 midway between the prop and the bottom of the keel. I believe your Contessa came with 3 and the one at the bottom of your keel was added by a previous owner.

Does anyone have any experience with a Lister Petters engine in salt water. I have just heard my engine has an aluminium block (news to me), and is not suited to salt water. I would be interested to hear if any modifications were necessary. Thanks. John

I drilled and tapped 2 small blind holes directly into the top of the masthead for my anchor light. I drilled them into the solid portion between the shackle and the slots for the halyards in the bottom portion of your photo. The wires are then routed around the outside of the masthead and into the mast pretty much where you have a hole already. Make sure you use a grommet in the hole to prevent fraying. You can use the same hole for the VHF antenna cable. Mine's been there for a few years now and no problems.

I've not seen a setup like yours. What grounds your mast? If that ground ever becomes corroded and looses continuity, as it will, then nothing works. I would not install such a system and would recommend a proper negative wire to each device with soldered and heat-shrinked connections inside the mast. I would also recommend using tinned copper wire to reduce corrosion.

How about replacing it with a stainless cabinet pull knob if you're unable to locate one. I replaced the gear disengage knob in the center of the throttle lever on mine with one, as it was missing when I bought the boat. (mine is a Lister Petters). I believe I may have re-threaded it to fit but it works great.
Cheers

Galaxaura is officially for sale. A completely rebuilt 1976 Contessa 26 with many modifications and improvements. The boat has a 7hp Lister-Petters diesel. Engine was rebuilt in 1999 and a new injector and injector pump installed in 2011. The engine works like a charm. The hull was damaged in 1996 when the boat beside it in winter storage was burnt. As a result the hull was completely ground down and re-fiber-glassed and the entire exterior was gel-coated. Lots of photos available of the rebuild. During the rebuild I had them add an extra layer of fiberglass to the coach roof in case I wanted to mount any winches, etc.  All 6 port lights were replaced with opening stainless Bomar and the hatch as well. There is a new 12v electrical panel with breakers and the hoses from the head to the holding tank were replaced and it works fine. There is a new Harken traveler on a custom stainless mount and the back-stay adjuster is new Harken as well as the boom vang. Mast lights and nav. lights were replaced with LED's and rewired. There is a new VHF antenna and cable on the mast as well as a new Standard Horizon DSC radio with a remote mic in the cockpit. New compass installed 2011. There is new 10' Harken pin stop jib track with 4 cars and new lifeline stanchions. The chain plates were relocated outboard and there is a new stainless boarding ladder on the stern as well. The mainsail, jib and genoa are all fair and the spinnaker looks almost new (never been used by me), there is also a spinnaker pole included. Additional equipment not installed but included are a stainless solar powered cabin vent and spin-lock rigging clutches. The gauges for the engine have not been re-installed but there is a new Perko 12 gal. fuel tank. The trailer is available as well and or delivery can be arranged. The bottom paint was done last year but never launched the boat (unfortunately). Price is $16000 and includes winter storage for next winter as well. If interested, you can respond here or send a pm. Thanks

The Contessa that was listed by bridgeyachts was mine but the listing expired last fall although they did have it posted for awhile after. I did send a copy of the listing by pm to your email Alex as I'm about to list it again and thought you might be interested.

I wouldn't recommend a plug from a plumbing shop as they will probably rust in place. The thread should be tapered and made of brass, 1/2" diameter I believe. The plugs are available at any marine supply and should only be about $5.00. And yes Jordan, you will only ever forget to replace that plug once before launch as it can be expensive to haul it out again, not to mention the laughter from the audience.

I have copies of the shop manuals for the AC1W and the AC1WM in PDF format that you might find useful. I can send them to you if you like. One bit of advice though if the boat is still in the water, make sure the cooling water intake is CLOSED before disconnecting the hose! A bit of info that would have been handy the last time I had mine apart, lol.

I give up. The last available weekend of the summer is now booked and I've only had the boat out once! She is now for sale as I have no time for her. Galaxaura is a 1976 JJT Contessa that has undergone a major hull rebuild. Tha chainplates have been moved outboard, all portlights and hatch are stainless Bomar and all open. Most hardware is Harken (not the winches) and includes a traveller on a custom stainless mount. The new stanchions and lifelines are not mounted yet but are included as well as numerous other bits and pieces. There is also a three axle Sellox  trailer available. The boat is currently in Hamilton, Ontario with a slip paid for until the end of the season. Not quite sure of a price yet but will be in the $20,000.00 area (trailer extra).

One more place you might try for part information and advice. I ordered an injector and pump from them and they were very good with advice. They also have good non-Petters knowledge of marine installations.

If it's a petters part you can try their Canadian distributor in Montreal 800-363-2259. I was dealing with a fellow named Guy there about one and a half years ago.

I use a Lowrance H2Oc and am quite happy with it even with the chart memory chips being a bit pricey. It's more like a handheld chartplotter, is waterproof and in color.

There is also a difference in mast height and sail area between the JJT and the UK Contessa. I remember the UK boats have a shorter mast but cannot recall the dimensions.

Just as an aside, I had the guys at Genco Marine in Toronto do some calculations for me regarding mid boom sheeting. Their conclusion was the boom wouldn't withstand the forces, (almost 2 tons at the point of attachment if I remember correctly). Perhaps a shorter boom would work. As an added aside Genco has a set of original sail plans and specs. for the JJT Contessa.
