Does anyone know a good place to get a new tiller made in Southern Ontario for a Contessa 26?  Suzeh

I just posted a picture of the bow roller and anchor frame on my boat.  It was custom made and came with the boat.

I am replacing my winches (at least two of them, maybe all four if I can't salvage two of the old ones).  I'm looking at the lewmar 16st.  They come in Alloy, Chrome, Bronze, All Chrome or All Bronze.  I don't know the advantages or disadvantages of each material.  What material do others have?  Also, as I'm kinda puny and not getting any younger, I'd really like two speeds (the 16st only comes in one).  Any other suggestions for a two-speed, self-tailing winch that will fit? Suzeh

Sounds good.  If I make it to the show, I'll be at the Bistro at 2:00. Suzeh.

Last year they didn't have the boathouse stage and instead gave the seminars in a lecture hall.  I couldn't find the seminar stage on the online floorplan, but why don't we meet at the entrance to the seminar stage at two -- I'm sure it will be easy to find once there -- and then head to the closest bar.  They are scattered throughout the building.  Would that work for everyone?
John how far off the 401 is your hotel?  Email me.  Suzeh.

I'll most likely be there.  suzeh.

Wow!  Congrats!  It's been a long time coming and now all your hard work has payed off.  I saw the pic in the gallery and she looks great! Suzeh

Yep, me too.  I tried to post "after" pics of Suselle all ready for her launch and I got the same msg.  Suzeh.

Hey! I don't get to the city very often, but I'll actually be there on Friday August 1st.  If you're meeting in the T.O. area, let me know.  I obviously won't be bringing my boat but I'd love to get together and talk shop.  I'm also available on the 8th.  Suzeh.

Hi All.  Yes Jose, that was my original intent...to have the 180 recut and made smaller and then adapted to fit the furler by adding luff tape and sun protection.  If I want it to maintain a decent shape when reefed, apparently I'd have to add something else.  I didn't realize that it was made with heavier material. I'm relying heavily on the advice of my sail loft guy, as, well, he's the expert and I'm very new at all this.  In our last discussion he proposed keeping it cheap by just adding the luft tape to the 180 and furling it all the way in and using mainsail only when the wind was too strong.  My gut was not liking that idea at all! so I thought it was time for a little survey with you all.  My sail-guy is away sailing right now.  When he gets back, I'll be in better shape to discuss this with him.

Jose, Re: the engine. There are a few things wrong, mostly regarding the fact that the boat has been sitting idle for awhile.  Things like soft fuel lines etc.  there was diesel everywhere, and few other seized up things - but so far nothing too serious.  They're waiting for parts.  Hopefully everything will arrive by this week.  They are also going to hook up the head for me as it was set for overboard discharge -- which of course is a no-no in the Great Lakes.  It looks like an easy job and I know I could do it myself, but yuck, I just don't want to.  When that is done, the sail-guy is going to help me get the mast up, install the furler and rig the boat.  I've got an instructor lined up to give me a few lessons on the boat, just to get me used to everything and feeling comfortable.  Then I'm broke, but hopefully sailing!  If you, or any of you other "local" folks are in the area, drop an email and visit!  Sue.

Hmmm.  Lots of good food for thought.  As my boat is sitting at the dock waiting for engine parts I won't be getting the mast up and furler installed for a week or two so lots of time to discuss this with the sail loft guy.  The 180 is in the best condition, but I have several hank-on sails to choose from to convert so we'll see what we can figure out.  Thanks for the advice.
Suzeh.

I am having an older 180 hank-on genoa adapted to fit on my brand new yet to be installed furler.  I'm having second thoughts, as I think 180 might be way too big.  I'm a new sailor and I don't want to get over-powered out there.  I was thinking that with the furler I could just roll it up a bit to reef, but apparently this isn't so with the way this sail is being re-cut.  So, if I understand it correctly, it will either be 180 or nothing.  Any advice?  What size foresail do people use the most?  Susan

I was reading this old thread about the shoe on the bottom of the keel.  As I'm getting some fiberglass work done on the keel anyway I was thinking about having a shoe added.  Has anyone done this modification on their boat?  If so, are you happy with it?  Anyone have a pic of what it looks like?
Suzeh

My hubby can't make it, but I'll still be there! I've got some serious shoppin' to do so maybe its for the best that he stays home. ;-)
2:00 at the little boat house on the far side of the lake.  I'll be looking for you.

I'll certainly be looking for deals so if the gettin' is better earlier in the show then I'd probably lean towards the 12th too.  I need a bunch of stuff to get Suselle ready for her spring launch.  But any weekend day would be fine with me. Suzeh

The 19th works for me.  I'll be there for sure and hopefully my husband will be able to join me, so count us in for two.  Looking forward to meeting everyone.  Suzeh.

Count me in for the boat show get-together.  I was disappointed that I missed last year, and this year I even have a boat!  I'll be watching for the details on the meeting spot etc.  Suzeh.

Busy day at the marina!  I just spent the afternoon watching/measuring/planning the best way to keep the snow off my boat over the winter.  It was quite the show, with all the boats jammed in together on their cradles and all the power-tools buzzing away.  Some very elaborate structures being built! and each one is different.  Any suggestions for a quick & easy tarp support?  (the mast is off the boat, so I can't use that).  Any important pointers I should be wary of? Any pictures floating around of tarp supports on a Contessa? suzeh
PS  BTW.  I've gotta say, as a new boat owner, this site has been a fantastic support! Almost every question I've had (and I've had many) has been answered by using the "search" function on this site.  What a great resource!

Yikes!!! I've just read through the suggested website. That was a little sobering! This is my first "big boat" (full keel, not on a trailer) so it's a bit of a new world for me.  One step at a time, I keep telling myself.
Regarding my original post, the topsides and deck are okay for now I think (hope)...they need only a cleaning and waxing.  I was just wondering about  the difference between "sandblasting" and "peeling"....but I think I've picked up enough info from my boatguy to know that he's not talking sandblasting with walnut shells as mentioned in a previous post.  For now I've opted for "plan B" ...just patch things up, paint, and get in the water in the spring.  Hopefully, she'll float me merrily away and all will be fine.  Like I said...one step at a time.
I've posted a "before" picture of Suselle in the gallery ...I'll post another in the spring after the hull is done and she's all spiffed up.

Looking for opinions/advice....   My new-to-me boat is in need of some hull repair due to blisters on the aft starboard side and rudder.  They have been opened and drying all summer and the surveyor told me the moisture metre shows the hull is dry as a bone.  I've hired a well-respected local "boat-guy" to do the work.  He suggests I sandblast the hull and then epoxy etc.  I've read in my boat mainentance book that under no circumstances should one sandblast a hull.  My "boat-guy" insists that he's had great results and there's no problem.  Any advice?  Oh, boat-guy also suggested a plan B: to just to repair the blisters, paint it and hope for the best.  Any advice?  Suzeh

My boat (1985) came with an F10 kerosene/diesel stove which is original.  Does anyone have a manual for this stove that they would be willing to share?  The folks at F10 kind of chuckled when I asked as I guess they haven't made those stoves for awhile now.

It's been a long wait but I finally found a boat and now she's MINE!!! She's a 1985 Hull #327. Her name is Suselle and there's a website written by her first owner on the Contessa Corner homepage. So between that and lots of info from her previous owner (thanks Terrence) I have a good grasp of her history.  As to her future...  she'll be moving to Penetanguishene ON for some TLC and fun with her new (very happy) human.  Thanks to Jimco48, John Lee, and jcfoto for the advice and encouragement. Suzeh.
